I have often wondered about the long hair players now more and more have. It hangs well below the helmet almost to the waist in some cases. Can a tackler grab the hair and be legal? If he can then it seems it would be better that the runner have short hair. If it is a foul then it makes sense to have long hair as some of those guys with long hair it would be hard not to grab it.

It is a part of the uniform and you can grab them by it. Remember Antrel Rolle doing it to Larry Johnson in 2006? I think he got called for a BS "unnecessary roughness" penalty though.

Rolle grabbed a hand full of facemask and about broke the RBs neck. That was a very grousome play. I thought he was dead.

If numbers are required to be on the backs of the jerseys, one would think that they have to be visible. I'm surprised the "new rule-happy" commish hasn't made a move on this yet.

One would think it would be the same as covering up a license plate on a car where you could not read it

No penalty. Cost the Ravens' a TD though.

+1.

And now that I've added one to your comment, we can start saying, "..and two would think that...." :)

Well forgive me for forgetting a detail in an otherwise meaningless regular season game from six years ago.

I seem to remember it as having been a hair-grab. I guess I was wrong.

Happened right in front of us...I seriously thought the dude was dead. That was gruesome. However, it saved the TD, they had to kick a FG and it allowed Leinart to march us up the field for a game tying FG that Rackers blew. This was the precursor game to the Monday Night Meltdown, which went down just about the same way. Matt led us up the field for a 40 yard game winning FG, and Rackers blew it. Two weeks in a row. Same finish. Beginning of the end for Leinart.

End of that year he sprained his shoulder...early the following season he broke his collarbone. Rackers, Denny and Leinart's ending, IMO, began in those two games.

It was a very tough two weeks to be a Cards fan. And yeah, I was shocked when LJ was not dead or even seriously injured after that headsnapper.

So karma from this play doomed us after that? Makes sense to me!

:D

Seriously, that was one of the scariest things I have ever seen on a football field that didn't actually turn out to be a tragedy.

agreed - I was at that game too, was frightening the way his head snapped back

as for the hair - it's legal, but i've seen players get the call as well - at leat twice this year I've noted a horse collar call when it was really a hair grab ..... refs don't see the detail, just the head/shoulders jerk back and the hand up high

After reading all your post I wonder why a RB, WR, etc would wear long hair as it appears you could break a guys neck by a big jerk on the hair? I know it may look cool. It is hard to imagine Fitz without his hair but when you risk serious injury by choice I would chose safety first. Sort of like flying a fighter without a helmet. Real bushy hair is not as bad as pigtail type I would think. Players of course have a lot of vanity.

Not a penalty

I thought Johnson was penalized for that, but per Wikipedia he was penalized for holding on to the hair after the tackle:

In an October 15, 2006 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Chiefs' running back Larry Johnson pulled Polamalu down by the hair in order to tackle him. Although tackling a player by his hair is legal and does not alone constitute unnecessary roughness,[33] Johnson was penalized for rising to his feet while retaining grasp of Polamalu's hair (pulling him up in the process)..

I actually believe Fitz cut his hair after that...shorter than it was anyway...and said that was why he did it.
