Plot Summary: "Hard to be a God" takes place in an Earth-like planet going through a period of barbaric violence: its own Middle Age. The local population is suffering from a ban issued on anyone who can read and write, and those who resist are brutally punished and killed. Don Rumata (played by Leonid Yarmolnik) is an Earth scientist on a mission to explore this alien planet. Coming from a culturally advanced world and displaying previosuly unseen abilities, he is rumored to have a God as one of his ancestors. Forbidden from interfering in the development of this planet, Rumata wanders through the city of Arkanar, the capital of Arkanar Kingdom, a world in a late feudalistic stage.
