Hypothetically, if we take a RB at #16, I'd guess Whisenhunt will go CB at #50 if he sees one he likes.

If we go DE at #16, I see RB or CB at #50. However you break it down, much to my chagrin, I don't think we draft Trevor Laws.

If we go DE and then cb , I could live with that. But if there isn't a rb available that we like in the 3rd round or we can't trade up to get 1 we like then I call Kevin Jones up before the draft is over only because it scares the hell out off me to go into this season with Edge as our only workload RB.

As far as Kevin Smith goes. it's hard to argue with the success he's had in college. If he had run a faster 40 it's hard to imagine how high he would be rated. That being said, when I read stats against teams like Louisiana-Lafayete, UTEP and Tulsa, it scares me.
He doesn't seem to be what Whiz is looking for. He doesn't appear to be a home run threat nor does he seem to be built to play the power back role and eventaully replace Edge.

Sorry this took so long. I was up in Green Bay. Despite my pick, expect the Pack to go corner unless someone drops.

BTW, I’m not being solicitous when I tell you this board is impressive. Since we’re not going to hang out, I don’t need to win your favor, but I wanted you all to know that the level of knowledge and the creativity on this board is outstanding. It’s what keeps me coming back.

As to the PSU players, I think Conner is the best of the bunch. I don’t see him in the top 50, but would as you may have judged from my philosophy I wouldn’t throw him out due to timed speed. I could see him with the Cards' pick in the third, but he will surely be gone by then. He’ll be a nice addition somewhere.

I dropped Blake for two reasons. I have heard he my go as high as late third and that’s too big of a gamble. Also, I understand he is not on the Cards’ board.

As to Forte, he has become one of the “now” backs who is moving up the board. I believe the Cards like him as well. I could see the Bears going that way, but hopefully not the Cards unless they wait until the third round and he is somehow there.

I knew my Gholston comment would get a response. It is clearly not based on his college history. It’s based on his style of play. He exposes himself too much when dueling with larger blockers or tackling larger opponents. There is also something odd about the way he plants to make a cut. It’s more of an impression than anything, but I do not believe he will prove durable. Obviously, I do not think this will impact where he is taken.

I don’t see Laws in the top 50, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go in the third. You have to wonder if he had it all along and only stepped it up for the draft.

I could see the Cards keeping Dansby & Rivers if I am right and Rivers drops. They do have a somewhat similar style, but Dansby is a sure thing.
Finally, I am not worried about Smith’s timed speed. He ran a 4.45 on Pro Day and was hand timed to a similar number on his first combine try. He is fast enough. Edge was never fast, but he was a great runner. Smith is the best pure runner in the draft. His vision is his best asset. He is one of those players who see the entire field, recognizes patterns and can make the cuts necessary to get the big yards. I keep hearing his opposition was weak. Did anyone saying that look at the film from the Texas game? His body type is a concern for durability, though he too was durable in college. I cannot find out if the Cards have looked at him, but if they haven’t they are missing a potentially great player.

Harry, after I saw your post on Ghoulston, I saw a show where all five "experts" said Ghoulston would be the major "drop" on the boards.

Good call.

you're right, he has a somewhat awkward body type because he's taller (making him look thinner than he really is), but I agree, his speed wont be deterrant.....looking at the CNNSI video of him, he's got some great vision and cut moves

On Trevor Laws. He was a pretty decent DT, improving ever year on a bad defense. Long arms, huge hands and is a scourge blocking kicks. And never seems to get hurt.

When new defensive coordinator Corwin Brown (a Bill Parcells protegee) moved him to DE in a 3-4, his game ramped up. I'm not going to quote his stats to try to prove anything.

The guy is a good football player, better at DE in a 3-4 but fairly good inside as a DT in a 4-3.

He's 6'1" at 304 lbs, shorter than many DEs. Many teams won't like that. I have no idea where he should be or will be drafted. My guess is some team will take him in the 2nd or 3rd round.

.

FWIW -- Charlie Casserly and Mike Mayock both like him, but project him to late 3rd early 4th round. It surprised me to have him that low.

Getting him in the third round would be a good thing ( guessing the the Cards go CB/RB on day one )

I like Laws in that he is a natural Dockett backup and similiar style -- and to have a d line where the starters are Dockett/Watson/Smith with Branch and Laws rotating in -- its good depth up front on the defense.

Trevor Laws

EnFuego, I wanted the Cards to draft him at #50, but based on most mocks, didn't think he'd be available. And then I saw Path to The Draft, and was very surprised that Charlie Casserly would say, "he's a late third selection". If we could get him in the third, after a RB/CB on the first day, I'd be very happy.
