Hartwig: Steelers not concerned about Cardinals

TAMPA, Fla. - Unlike some previous Super Bowls, there hasn't been any disrespectful banter or trash talk between the Steelers and Arizona Cardinals.

At least there hadn't been until Thursday as the teams held their last media day before Super Bowl XLIII at Raymond James Stadium.

Steelers center Justin Hartwig unexpectedly called into question Arizona's schedule while talking about the difficulty of the one Pittsburgh played during the regular season. The Steelers went 12-4 and won the AFC North Division while playing what was considered the league's most difficult schedule.

Arizona, meanwhile, won the NFC West with a 9-7 record, losing four of its final six games. "We played the toughest schedule in the league," Hartwig said while talking about the Steelers' offensive line."It's easy to point fingers and say, 'You guys didn't live up to expectations' and 'You guys were the letdown of the team.' We try not to get caught up in that. At the same time, we were playing the top defenses in the league week in and week out.

We weren't playing in the NFC West. We had the toughest schedule in the league. I think we gained a lot of valuable experience from our schedule. We see things on film and things are a lot easier now.

"We're not playing Baltimore's defense. Arizona isn't as complicated as Baltimore. I think we understand what we're doing going into this game."
Hartwig also looked at what Arizona did in a Dec. 21 loss at New England - a 47-7 thrashing - as a point of reference between the Steelers and Cardinals.

"We went up to New England and we took it to them," Hartwig said of Pittsburgh's 33-10 win at New England Nov. 20. "These guys went into New England and lost by 50 points or something like that. So I think it was a team, in my mind, that was written off at the end of the year.

They snuck into the playoffs. I guess they won their division - they backed into it. Maybe they were a little underappreciated. At the same time, we're only concerned with the Pittsburgh Steelers, not the Arizona Cardinals. We feel like if we go out and play our best football and take care of business and do what we need to do, we're the only team that can beat us."

That mentality by the Steelers is one that permeates throughout the team.
Some would call it arrogance, others say it's confidence.

“It ain't about any other teams. It's about us," said nose tackle Casey Hampton. "If we go out there and play the way we're capable of playing, we're going to be good. "That's our mentality. We feel like if we're on, we'll be all right. If we don't beat ourselves, we'll be all right. That's just how it is. That's how we've always felt. Does that make us bad guys thinking like that? It ain't no swagger, that's how it is." Hampton did, however, stop short of making any guarantees, something he was quick to point out.

"Notice I didn't say we're going to win. I said we'll be all right," he said.
The Steelers feel that their top-rated defense will be enough to slow Arizona's offense, which averaged 26 points per game during the regular season and is average 31 per game in the playoffs.

They also feel they can exploit a Cardinals defense that allows 26 points per game. "Arizona's a team that you don't want to get into a shootout with, but at the same time, I feel confident that our defense can slow them down a little bit," Hartwig said. "After watching tape, the opportunities are definitely there for us to put some points on the board."

How did we back into winning our division? I'm liking how this is shaping up. Inside, they have no respect for us. I believe its the same way with their coaches. The stage is set!

I think the Irony of this is over the course of the playoffs we are playing the most complete football of any team. Offensively running and throwing we have big plays AND grind it out drives. Defensively we have shut down run games and have 8 INT's.

Keep running your mouth Hartwig. I love that NE correlation. Listen I am the first to say as of today we would get our a$$ kicked if this game was played in the cold. But its not. Its in Tampa. So go watch the New England tape Steelers.

God I just have this feeling they are so cocky about this game. I hope we blow them out like Colin was talking about yesterday.....

Im gettin a bit worn over you guys overplayin this disrespect card............its all youve been crowin about the last 3 weeks. "No respect........no love........no one is pickin us". You know what we've done over the years with the Baltimores, Pats, Chargers etc when the media piloted those teams above the Steelers ? We've just took it all in and allowed the team to answer their critics on the field. No one crowin in front of the media about being disrespected............Win the Superbowl on Sunday and it will come.

But stop whining about it.................gotten really old.

Im not surprised a reporter tried in earnest to draw a "guarantee" from Pittsburgh........i love how these guys just try and create drama.......they need a story.LOL........oohhhhhh the media. How they shape views........

Pin it up on the bulletin board!

If you really need that much motivation for this game, youve already lost the game my friend. If you cant find the focus and bring intensity because you want this more than the other team, then you should write yourself off.

Why is it that when a player or coach from a favored team talks about losing they always say only we can beat ourselves. Then when they lose they don't give credit to the other team, instead they say we killed ourselves with turnovers and penalties.

The Rams did it all the time during their run w/GSOT. I hated it. Even their fans here in St. Louis would say the same thing. They never gave credit to the other team for forcing those mistakes.

I hope we beat the Steelers and people still give us no credit and say that they beat themselves.

Its kind of a given, a win and its Pittsburg losing the game not us winning. Normal behavior.

You and your "cherry picking" teams and pretending to be Pittsburghs biggest fans is whats old.

A player went over the line with his smack talk and of course we are going to be pissed. Hopefully the players are too. Get a grip.

Pittsburg fans are actually the worst of the worst.

They have no lives outside football, it's all they have and so it's on and on and on about the Steelers from every angle including out the water boys butt angle.

That's what's old.

a few random thoughts:

I could care less about the disrespect thing

I am more interested in what this might say about the Steelers mindset. If you boil down what Hartwig said -- its this: "They are a fluke, we are way better than them". Happy to hear this as a Cardinal fan -- I hope lots of other Steeler players feel this way.

Finally -- of all the guys on the Steelers who should pop off -- I dont think a mediocre center on a sub par offensive line should be the guy. James Harrison (for example) could at least back up his words.

Same thing the Falcons, Panthers, and Eagle fans said. Saw what happened to them.

100% agree and you put that into words much better then myself. It seems like they think this is going to a walk in the park compared to what they played against with the worlds toughest schedule.

Riiiiight:rolleyes:

Because playing the "nobody believed in us card" hasn't worked EVER in the history of sports.

I love how I have heard that comment from both sides this week but its pretty silly to think a football team playing with a chip on its shoulder isn't going to be more effective then a team without one.

If the past 3 weeks have proved anything then that is it.

Well said. If that is the Steeler's mentality going into the game, they could be in for a rude awakening.

Hee heee. Just keep watching the tape of that New England game. Just keep watching that one.

This is just what every other team has done to the Cards in the playoffs. They look at a few games at the end of the year, when the Cards had nothing really to play for except to avoid injury, and they think THAT is the team they are going to play.

It's been a long time coming and a long time hearing about it. It is a blow back of years and years of listening to every media outlet bash the team, organization and fans.

Not only that this had started BEFORE the playoffs, and each week we have taken it upon ourselves to watch the doubt'ers and the hate'ers come out in full force.

So we are tired of hearing about it.

If you are tired of hearing about it then leave this CARDINALS message board and don't come back.

You know what I am tired of ? The Steeler nation. I can't say I am tired of the Pittsburg fans but I am tired of the national fans who are a bunch of bandwagoner's and front runners.

They are like Cowboys fans with a tiny bit more class. Which really is not too much. Plus I have heard the Steeler nation complain to high heaven about this and that. So, don't get too high and mighty about your team and fan base.

First of all, nobody forced you to visit this site.

Second, we're just fans. We're not the players. It doesn't matter whether or not our feelings are hurt; but my guess is that, every time a Cardinal player is tempted to take a blow from practice or take his nose out of his playbook, some pinhead will remind him that "the Cards aren't good enough and don't belong here" and it will help him reset his focus.

So I say, "keep it up." We need any edge we can grab hold of.
