Hughes Tivo to HD

No HD original unit

Ah...well, they may not be doing that one free. I got mine free because my Tivo was HD and I needed a new one to see the new stations, so I guess they feel they have to upgrade people for free.

I dunno for sure though...that sucks.

I got a free one but I was upgrading the HR10-250 HD Tivo unit.

Try to get your best deal. Call back several times and talk to different reps. You would be suprised at the disparity in offers you can get that way.

Nidan, try this just for fun:

Call: 1-800-763-7772 and tell them you had a message from DTV saying that I needed my Tivo upgraded so I could get the new HD channels. See what happens.

See, they called me, left that number saying I was eligible for a free upgrade, which a month or two ago they had told me would be $99.

See what happens!

HR 20 vs HR 21 ?

Also DIRECTV Plus® HD DVR or DIRECTV ® HD DVR

I'm getting confused again ?

DTV is quoting $299 for HR 21

Circuit City $99 for Hr 20

I guess it didn't work? the phone number?

I have both of those above...but the over the air antenna seems to be the big differnece, and the shiny color.

Even if you don't use OTA in the HR20 and HR21 are essentially the same except the HR20 has the additional feature of having two over the air tuners built in.

So they want $200 more for the "newer" model with less features... go figure!

The dish question was related to installation.

ie did I need to just switch out the unit or does the dish need changing as well

Well it certainly was fun. It appears that number now directs me to another number to talk with "Exciting Local Ladies".

Guess I'm looking at the C City $99 upgrade.

That number was nothing like as much fun.

Paraphrased ...

Screw you, $299, + shipping total around $340

Calling the regular customer service line will get you nowhere. You have to speak to a retention representative. You used to be able to call them direct but you cannot any longer.

Basically, you have to tell them that you want to cancel your DTV. Tell them that your seeing better offers from your local providers and they are offering you a free HDTV tuner (or HDTV DVR) for free if you switch.

Your first offer will the crappy one that you got before because the regular customer service reps at DTV cannot offer you the best deal. Basically tell them it's not good enough and say you still want to cancel.

They will then send you to the RETENTION Department (or DTV calls them Specialists). You will then have to repeat your reasons that you want to cancel. Again, they might try and offer you a sub par deal. It will probably be better then the first but still not the best. Again, just say sorry but your getting better offers for HDTV DVR's and you still want to cancel.

Then they will offer you the best deal they have at that time. That should work. It has worked for me, my buddies and some family.

I was able to get 2 free HDTV DVR's (MPEG 4), Free Super Fan added to my NFL Sunday ticket, Free preview of a few other HD channels. All I had to do was pay for the shipping of the 2 units.

Unfortunately, dealing with Direct TV and getting the best deal is sort of like dealing with a Car salesman. You have to be willing to walk away to get the very best deal.

I've never had anything but good from them, even if they've had to charge for things...

Sometimes, you just actually have to pay for stuff in life.

New wrinkle.

Went though a local affiliate to 'make it easier', they yes, screwed up and sent receiver not DVR. They are taking it back.

So we called DTV again, price on HR21 dropped $100 last week

The HR20 is the better unit (more features)!
