HD DVD To Debut Today

The first high-definition video disks using Toshiba's HD DVD format are due to go on sale today (Tuesday). They include Universal's Serenity and Warner Bros.' The Last Samurai and Phantom of the Opera. Players are also expected to make their debut at all Best Buy stores today and at select Sears, Wal-Mart, Costco and Tweeters locations by the end of the week, according to Home Media Retail magazine.

Mods please merge with HD DVD thread. I couldnt find it, but didnt look too hard. ;)

HD-DVD (and blu-ray) will be extremely buggy for a few years, and it will be a long time before we see some true HD stuff--taking advantage of the format. Serenity, for example, is a direct port of the DVD except with HD video. I have a decent TV and a progressive scan DVD player hooked up with Component cables. So a $500 player for a format that will likely not last is not a purchase I will be making. IF I even sniff the high-def formats, it will most likely be blu-ray, but even then, I'm not expecting too much.

Yeah, I think it will be very interesting to see how these HD DVD players and discs sell initially. Also it will be interesting to see how quickly Blockbuster and Netflix pick up the new format.

That being said, I may have to swing by BB this weekend and see if they have a demo unit hooked up. I havent seen it yet in person. :)
