Oh Shane, I don't know if you have watched an HDDVD yet, but for some, the differences are minimal. Mine were pretty dramatic, because of my 1080p display.

The biggest difference that you should be able to see are blacker blacks, (Batman Begins) crisper colors (King Kong) and less grain.

The only thing I started to watch in actual HD is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I got about 25 minutes in and couldnt stand it so I shut it off.

My TV is an HD projection eith a max of 1080I so I may not be as happy with it as you. I will let you know when I get some HD DVD's I really wanna watch.

Check Frys in Fridays ad. They had about 5 or 6 HDDVDs on sale for about $13.99. Thats a great B&M price, and about my absolute limit on spending per title.

I have yet to get my hands on Planet Earth, and would love to rewatch Season 5 of Smallville, but not at those prices.

Oh, and you will probably be interested in Blade Runner HDDVD. It is a 5 HDDVD set, (yep 5 HDDVDs) for $27.95 with free shipping at Amazon. I may get this.

That's a great price for a HDDVD player, but the lack of multi-channel audio out is a deal breaker for me.

Regarding old films as new HD releases, think of it this way-Film has always been a "high resolution" format, video is just now catching up. 1080P is now and 4K is on the horizon, once they get the storage and data rates caught up, consumer media will be able to show movies as they were originally captured. I for one can't wait! :grabs:

Actually, there is a way that you can get the A20 with multichannel audio for $250 as well.

You still get the 5 free movies too. You have to jump through a couple of hoops, but it may be worth it, depending on the person.

Just a clarification.

No movies before 2000 were shot in HD. HD means High Definition, which is a video format. Film vs. HD (or any video) is predicated on the resolution of the image. In essence, High Definition is higher than standard video, however, it is nowhere near the resolution of film.

High Resolution, therefore, can refer to movies shot on film, from 16mm to 72mm. High Definition refers to the video signal, not the movie itself (although that is changing with many more features starting to be filmed on it).

The rest of what Dreamcast said is spot on.

Ok so can the movies shot back before 2000 be truly changed to an HD format? If they were not shot in such a format?

Shane, do you have the original boxes? I wonder if you still have the UPC on there, that you could turn in to get the 5 free movies.

Makes me wonder if he bought the player, just to get the free movies, and then sold it.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about. Looks like until I scrape up $1000 for a t.v., I will be stuck with Jemaine and Bret's t.v.

He certainly could have. But he took a loss on the player because I got it for 179.00 I went and looked at best buy and they were still selling same model for 299.00 so seems like it didnt pay for him if thats what he did. In fact the remote and batteries were still in factory packaging so you are probably dead on.

Amazon was selling it for 225 for a while there. You still got a hell of a deal at $179 though. I paid $249 and with the $75 difference, you could easily buy 5 movies with that if you shop around.

Interesting.... Thanks for the link! :)

No problem, let me know if you decide to get it. I really wanted to get the A20 for the analog outs too, but decided against it. If Costco ever comes out with one reasonably price, I'll probably take back my D2.
