The Boston Marathon is an event you don't want to miss. People from all over the world come to Boston to run it or watch it. The 26.2-mile route starts in Hopkinton and ends at Copley Square on Boylston Street in Boston. The marathon, hosted by the Boston Athletic Association, is celebrating its 129th year on Monday, April 21.
According to the Boston Athletic Association, the marathon has a rolling start with competitors in wheelchairs starting around 9 a.m., professional men and women between 9:37 and 9:47 a.m., para-athletes at 9:50 a.m., with the remaining waves every 25 minutes until the last leaves Hopkinton at 11:15 a.m. The elite runners typically take a little more than two hours to complete the race. It can take some up to seven hours to finish, so there are lots of runners to watch and cheer on throughout the course.
You might want to take the train if you are going to cheer on the runners, as there will be many road closures and parking will be hard to find. If you want to experience the Boston Marathon, here is one way to get to the route from Brockton using public transportation.

If you’d rather avoid the crowds at the finish line and watch the race along the route, stay on the Framingham/Worcester Line past Back Bay — the train also stops at several key marathon spots, including Lansdowne, Newtonville, Auburndale, West Newton, Wellesley Farms, Wellesley Hills, Wellesley Square, Natick Center, West Natick, Framingham, and Ashland. According to the MBTA, some of these stations are less than a half mile from the marathon route.
The MBTA is selling commuter rail all-day marathon passes where passengers can hop on and hop off all day for $10. This savings is available on all lines and can be purchased at South Station, North Station, Back Bay, mTicket and from conductors on marathon day.
