Hey everyone, lifelong Heat fan here, wanted to drop by and shed some light on the trade and give a little insight in to what you can expect and the pros and cons of both sides.

Lets take a quick look at the cons for both sides. For the Heat the having to aquire Marcus Banks in the deal seems to be the only con to this trade. He makes roughly 4 Mill and comes to a team that is already full at the PG position with Jwill,Chris Quinn,Inactive Smush parker and now Banks. Its an uneccesary addition but needed in order to dump shaqs salary.

For the Suns the Con would definitly be the most talked about thing on espn for the past 2 days. The Huge contract and a declining shaq that cant stay on the court due to injuries and foul trouble. Alot of Suns fans seem to think its nonsense and hes in great shape from pictures you have seen but i will dwell on that in a second.

I want to clear up one thing real quick before we go on and its not out of anger its common sense. Its ridiculous to think that Shaq can instantly get better and healthy because of a trade. Its not going to rejuvinate him because he doesnt need rejuvinating hes just old and ant get off the ground anymore and cant defend the right way without getting into foul trouble. What im trying to say is hes not magically gonna get better because he got traded. The year after our title he came out motivated to repeat and he just couldnt do it, he doesnt have the legs for it anymore and its ridiculous to think so. Its different from his trade to the Heat 4 years ago where he was 4 years younger and still able to produce by his 23 and 11 year he had in 04-05. So he came in upset he was traded and wanted to prove it. Now hes traded because hes at the end of the road and is tying up 20 mill a year in cap which could be used to sign arenas, baron davis, elton brand, artest, etc.

PROS FOR SUNS- after that long realization of what shaq is all about.Heres what he actually can bring you. As a player on the offensive end hes not gonan bring you much anymore. His point will come from the occasional Off Reb that comes his way that he will slam down. he cant create a shot for himself anymore. He will open up the lanes when he is on the floor so nash can get in and get easy baskets. nash will get shaq the ball a bit more than what he got in miami. At most he will spark the team and give them a mental boost but dont be surprised if he starts again with the "i want the ball more" talk. Hes a big baby at times and if he doesnt get his way you will hear it. He has the rings and no one on the suns does so he will make that be known.

PROS FOR HEAT- Basically we get back a top 25-35 player in the league whos only 29 and has career avgs of 18 points 10 reb 2 stls and 1.5 blocks . can defend anyone on the floor at any position and is a great compliment to wade that reminds ppl of the Jordan-Pippen combo. We also dump 20 mill in cap with the potential to sign Marion to an extension and on top of that add another top Free agent this offeseason like Brand to add to Wade,Marion and our top 5 pick this year (maybe 1 should the lottery ball roll our way). We also turn the team over to Wade where it should be.

Thats my opinion on how things are looking, and i dont mean to make it look like the Heat made out like winners, cuz at 8-38 were not close. But as everyone has said on ESPN,TNT,etc. This made no sense for the Suns and helped the Heat greatly.

So all the pros are actually cons for the Suns and Marion is suddenly Pippen now. To top it off Brand and a top 5 arevirtually yours. I am sure Marion will sign a 5 year 20 million dollar deal because the future is so bright too. Depressing time for Suns fans.

Duh you didn't realize that Marion was the second coming of pippen? Pippen invented to point-forward position, and Marion has perfected it. Except that he can't dribble or pass.

Pippen and Marion are both pretty bad outside shooters.

Marion and Pippen both seem to think that they are better than they actually are.

Marion is a little over the hill, whines a lot, wants a lot of love and money, hasn't got along with hard nosed coachs in the past (Riley).. there are reasons why we did trade him and probably tried to in the past.

Also you have NO money to spend on anyone, let alone on Brand if you keep Marion.

Totally agree with the OP. PHX fans are just setting themselves up for a huge disappointment when they realize how far Shaq has fallen.

That's really the point, all these "experts" saying Shaq is done, Phx is stupid, are the same folks who gave us their same opinion about Nash.

I've never liked Shaq, but I'm a Suns fan and if I could root for Marbury.. I can cheer for anyone they put on the team.

Honestly, I don't care if Shaq spends the majority of his time kicking back on the bench.. as long as he's out there knockin' heads when we play the Fakers or Sterns.

Wow, couldn't all these same point about Marion be said about Shaq too??

Also, if Shaq was still so great and valuable, why was Miami so eager to get rid of him for a hack like Marion?? IIRC, it was Miami who contacted the Suns about wanting to get rid of Shaq, not the other way around.

Pat Riley values a big man more than anyone else in the league. If he thought Shaq had anything left in the tank he would not have traded him.

Biggest thing to me is we traded a 3rd wheel player that thinks he is a top player for someone who was a top player but now is willing to just fit in and be a third/fourth/fifth wheel.

Marion is great but he felt unappreciated when he was the highest paid player on the team.
On the good side he plays hard, is exciting to watch, and puts up good numbers. Good luck to him and Miami.

Sometimes it just comes down to a change in chemistry. Miami was stuck in a rut and Shaq couldn't carry them. I don't think Phoenix has this expectation of Shaq. I always thought the Suns just needed a Nazr Mohammed type player to plug up the middle. Shaq at half speed should be able to do this.

Did you do your homework? If Marion had opted in next year (which he would have) and we still had Banks on our books we would be in the exact same boat.

Only time will tell how good or how bad this deal really is.

Exactly.

Now pay attention everyone who has come here lately if you are not a suns fan and think shaqs contract is the reason this is a bad trade:

If marion would have opted (almost gauranteed) we would have had about 5 million in cap space that is not actually cap space, since at that amount it is actually technically the MLE. The MLE will be worth most likely 5-6 million and is actually part of the cap, BUT it can be used when over the cap.

http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#20

"So it is not true that being under the cap necessarily means a team has room to sign free agents. For example, assume the cap is $49.5 million, and a team has $43 million committed to salaries. They also have a Mid-Level exception for $5 million and a Traded Player exception for $5.5 million. Even though their salaries put them $6.5 million under the cap, their exceptions are added to their salaries, putting them at $53.5 million, or $4 million over the cap. So they actually have no cap room to sign free agents, and must instead use their exceptions. "

So basically we have the same bargaining room, just that we won't be left empty handed from marion opting. Instead we get to take a chance on Shaq coming to town.

You can debate about shaq being old or shaq not fitting into the system etc but for the love of god don't debate about how bad shaqs contract is, because the suns were screwed in that department anyway.

If shaq puts up strong numbers, this will look like a steal by next year. Odd I know, but thems the ropes of the NBA cap rules.

I can't believe ANYONE is talking about Marion

to me, I think he will really struggle in Miami... While his rebounding may improve, his FG%, PPG, APG will all decline...

He doesn't create his own shot, and for all those who say.. but but but, he was good before Nash got o Phoenix... He was also 8 years younger and a guy who relies on his Athleticism, being 30, and now on a team without Nash, and all the Talent, his is in for a SHOCK...

With a Team that struggles to get anyone shots, its not going to be pretty for Marion... IMO...
