not a fan of "traditional arguments" in a contemporary world, but is it something along the lines of:

Since the spouse has been out of work he/she needs financial support while on her/his own trying to get back into the work force. It also is so they dont have to deal with extreme lifestyle change.

Now, my wife can do my job no doubt. But it is a fact that Shaq's wife can't do his job, nor make the type of money he does doing it.
