New University of Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins has filled one of the two coordinator positions and is awaiting a decision on the other.

Arizona State quarterback coach/passing game coordinator Mark Helfrich has agreed to become the offensive coordinator, and Hawkins is waiting to hear from California defensive coordinator Bob Gregory after the Golden Bears play Thursday against Brigham Young in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Helfrich, 32, and Gregory, 42, coached with Hawkins at Boise State.

If Gregory does not take the Buffaloes position, Hawkins is expected to bring Boise State defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Ron Collins to Boulder.

A California spokesman said Gregory was "busy game-planning" Monday.

Helfrich told Arizona State quarterbacks after practice Sunday for the Insight Bowl he would be leaving for a position on Hawkins' staff. He reportedly will make $250,000 a year. CU plays Arizona State in 2006 and 2007. Boise State assistant head coach/offensive line coach Chris Strausser told The Idaho Statesman on Monday he will accompany Hawkins, while running backs/special teams coach Kent Riddle and defensive line coach Romeo Bandison also will join Hawkins at CU.
