Hellboy 2 Gets a Working Title
Source: Gustavo
March 11, 2006

SCI FI Wire spoke with Hellboy star Ron Perlman, who revealed the sequel's working title is Hellboy 2: The Golden Army:

"I think that that's an invention based on a number of different things that have appeared in other comic books," Perlman said of the title in an interview while promoting the upcoming television miniseries Stephen King's Desperation.""But basically the idea for [Hellboy 2] was something that was hatched by [Hellboy comic-book creator] Mike Mignola, with [Hellboy writer-director] Guillermo [del Toro] sitting alongside of him. And then Guillermo, of course, did all of the writing. But, you know, the story was Mignola."

Hellboy II Dropped by Sony Pictures
Source: Variety
May 2006

Variety says that Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro will helm an adaptation of Roald Dahl's 1973 book "The Witches" for Warner Bros., but the article also has an update on Hellboy II:

Futuristic thriller "Killing on Carnival Row" is set up at New Line, with Arnold and Anne Kopleson producing through Kopelson Entertainment. A screenplay has been delivered, said Del Toro, but with no budget nor cast, project has still to be greenlit. Other majors are reviewing "Hellboy II," which was at Revolution Studios, as Sony has bowed out.

Guillermo del Toro on Hellboy 2
Source: Time Out
November 22, 2006

Time Out caught up with Hellboy 2: The Golden Army director Guillermo del Toro, who gave a quick update on the sequel:

First up is 'Hellboy 2', which is due to go into production early next year. 'It will shoot in Hungary and the idea is to make a movie that is more fun, more loose and more spectacular than the original,' he explained. 'We all learned our lessons doing the first one and we want to put them to work on the second one. Mike Mignola and I have come up with the story and it's a little closer to the comic books than the first one was.'

The movie is expected to hit theaters in 2008.

Hellboy 2 Starts Shooting this Week?
Source: Caboodle.hu, The Age April 9, 2007

Hungary's Caboodle.hu says that Hellboy 2: The Golden Army starts shooting this week. Here's an article from last week:

State development bank MFB is likely to invest in the €90 million Korda film studio built in Etyek by entrepreneur Sándor Demján, according to Magyar Hírlap. The bank has a budget for filmmaking, but it has not yet invested it.

The studio will open one month ahead of schedule next week. The first phase of the development is completed and shooting of the second part of Hellboy 2 will start next week.

Writer/director Guillermo del Toro also talked more about the plot with The Age:

Hellboy concluded with an intense image of its character's connection with another person. The new film, del Toro says, deals with the aftermath of romantic fulfilment. "It's about the first year of marriage," but it's also about "a deadly war between humans and magical creatures", in which the title character has a major dilemma: which side is he actually on?

Visit the link above for more. The sequel, starring Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones and Luke Goss, opens on August 1, 2008.

'Hellboy 2' heads to Korda
Pic is first for Hungarian studio
By KATJA EICHINGERCANNES --

Universal's "Hellboy 2" is to be the first U.S. production to shoot at newly built Korda Studios in Hungary with principal photography to kick off in June.

Helmed by Guillermo del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth"), the pic will be the largest production ever to be shot in Hungary. Despite benefiting from a 20% tax incentive, Hungary has so far had problems attracting high profile productions such as "Hellboy 2" because the country lacked suitable soundstages.

With the completion of $124 million Korda Studios, which is situated in an abandoned military base 16 miles outside of Budapest, Hungary intends to offer a viable alternative to the Czech Republic and woo U.S. studios away from Prague.

Korda Studios is to feature six state-of-the-art sound stages and the world's second- largest water tank. Four sound stages and production facilities opened for business in April this year, six months ahead of schedule in order to accommodate "Hellboy 2." Construction still continues for the remainder of the complex including the water tank.

Plot Summary: With a signature blend of action, humor and character-based spectacle, the saga of the world's toughest, kitten-loving hero from Hell continues to unfold in "Hellboy II: The Golden Army." Bigger muscle, badder weapons and more ungodly villains arrive in an epic vision of imagination from Oscar®-nominated director Guillermo del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth," "Hellboy").

After an ancient truce existing between humankind and the invisible realm of the fantastic is broken, hell on Earth is ready to erupt. A ruthless leader who treads the world above and the one below defies his bloodline and awakens an unstoppable army of creatures. Now, it's up to the planet's toughest, roughest superhero to battle the merciless dictator and his marauders. He may be red. He may be horned. He may be misunderstood. But when you need the job done right, it's time to call in Hellboy (Ron Perlman).

Along with his expanding team in the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development--pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair), aquatic empath Abe (Doug Jones) and protoplasmic mystic Johann--the BPRD will travel between the surface strata and the unseen magical one, where creatures of fantasy become corporeal. And Hellboy, a creature of two worlds who's accepted by neither, must choose between the life he knows and an unknown destiny that beckons him.

Heck, even the NY Times film critic liked it:
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpa...931A35757C0A9629C8B63&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=1

Mike Mignola's ''Hellboy'' comics have a drizzly, musty gothic ambience -- the same fetid air that H. P. Lovecraft circulated in his fiction. The writer and director Guillermo del Toro has brought a similar woozy, disconcerting melancholy to his film adaptation, and his obvious affection and affinity for that dankness alone would make ''Hellboy'' worth seeing. But Mr. del Toro lets loose with an all-American, vaudevillian rambunctiousness that makes the movie daffy, loose and lovable.

For Mr. del Toro, this is hard-core. He turned down a shot at directing the third ''Harry Potter'' film because he nurtured a need to bring Mr. Mignola's colossal, monstrous-looking, Twizzler-colored champion to the screen. The director's determination pays off, mostly, as a dreamy mating of filmmaker, craft and material.

Alright so there wasn't anything else worth seeing so I checked this one out today.

For me it was OK. A bit over the top at times. Yet also had some pretty funny parts. I was entertained for most of the movie. Ron Perlman who plays Hellboy does a great job. However the story was pretty weak IMO. Visuals were awesome. If you were a Hellboy fan you would probably like this movie much more than me.

Overall I give it a C+.

I'd give it a solid "B."

It was a different tone than what I expect from Hellboy. Maybe a little too flippant and not enough of a dark feel to it.

Enjoyable, though. I think my (slight) problems with it aren't typical.

I just got back from watching this and I agree with Pariah's rating. It was entertaining and had great visuals. The writing seemed to meh level on this one though (well with the exception of the scenes where Abe and Hellboy get drunk - see sig).

Not as good as the first one but worth the $$ to go see it.

I loved it. On a purely enjoyability scale, it topped Dark Knight for me. Dark Knight was definitely a better movie but it seemed to take itself way too seriously. That's okay; that's exactly what Dark Knight was supposed to do. Unfortunately for comic fans, Hellboy on film wasn't really dark like he was in the comics. That's okay by me because I wasn't a big fan of the comics and couldn't get into them.

That was my take. I loved the first one this one was OK. I didn't feel like Hellboy was quite the smart a$$ that he was in 1, he softened after getting the chic.

Visuals are great, good characters, and some good fight scenes but I'm with Pariah the story was a tad bit weak.

I didn't say that. I liked the story itself quite a bit.

Oh sorry, I guess I said that lol
It was an OK story but for Hellboy it wasn't quite up to par with the comics just my opinion. I thought the characters they had did a great job
