Bills GM gives Henry permission to visit Arizona

Associated Press
Feb. 24, 2005 04:25 PM

INDIANAPOLIS - One day after the Minnesota Vikings agreed to trade Randy Moss to Oakland, Donahoe was asked about a possible deal to send running back Travis Henry to Arizona for offensive lineman L.J. Shelton.

Shelton has already visited Buffalo, and Donahoe said the Bills have given Henry permission to visit Arizona altough that has not yet happened.

"That's as far as the talks have gone," Donahoe said.

Donahoe believes Henry may be a better bet for an NFL team than one of the rookie running backs in this year's deep class. At the top of the list are Texas' Cedric Benson and Auburn's Carnell "Cadillac" Williams and Ronnie Brown.

"Travis has proven he can rush for 1,400 or 1,500 yards and he plays hurt," Donahoe said. "If you look at Corey Dillon or Travis, I think that's the way to go. The thing you know about Travis is what he can give you."

I guess this is pretty new info not posted yet.. It was over at http://www.azcentral.com/sports/cardinals/articles/0224combine-ON.html

A guard from BYU did the BP 44 times at 225 thats pretty damn strong.

Also why is Tom Donahue mentioned in every article today. No matter if its about Mike Williams, Clarrett, the 49ers. I understand the Henry part of the page.

Also stole this from the Bills site.

i saw another clip on sportscenter where they talked abuot the henry situation

john clayton reports that miami is looking to draft a RB and is no longer interested in henry (old news)

then he went on to say that the shelton/henry deal has been stalling because the cards were waiting to see what happens with the other FA RBs

now that alexendar and edge have been tagged, this trade talk will pick up through the weekend, and i'm assuming if all goes as planned it will be finalized by next week

i know its old news, but i'll go out to say that by tuesday before the FA starts we will have shelton in some kind of trade

What would be the purpose of him visiting? Physical? For him to check out the facilitys? etc

I'm actually wondering about this.

Well I thought he already passed a physical. Green, Graves, and the medical staff will all be at the Combine. This may take longer than expected.

Physical, contract talks, talk with the management, talk with coaches, talk about contract situation, show the facilites.

You pretty much do what you do with a normal FA with the ultimate goal of him signing a contract.

John Idzik our contract guy and cap specialist right behind Graves is still in AZ, as is the bidwells I assume.

Or he is in town looking for a new house.

From what I read in that article, I'm beginning to get the impression that Henry may not be that thrilled with a trade to the Cardinals. He's not dumb enough to balk on what may be his only real option but may be stalling to see if another option presents itself during the Combine week. Otherwise, I think he would have visited AZ by now, like Shelton has in Buffalo.

Agree completely with the long term commitment or no deal stance.

I am hoping its contract talk. We can't trade LJ for a one year RB. He must sign an extension for this deal to happen imo.

It might take longer, but we're not in a rush. As long as Tampa Bay etc. offers draft picks NOT players we have until the draft to figure this one out.
The pressure is on the Bills NOT us. For us the only negative with waiting is that we can't sign Jordan, which I doubt ever figured into G&G's plan anyway.

The Cards will get this deal done. Henry is a great fit for us and we don't have to give up our 2nd rd. pick. I feel Henry wants to come to AZ, he was give permission probably because he asked. I would be worried about the deal falling thru if Henry wasn't coming to visit. Green and Graves are at the combine but don't think for a minute one can't fly and still be back the next day. We need a RB and have a solid chance to land one without the possibilty of drafting a bust.

Let's hope Travis Henry doesn't spend too much time with his former Tennessee teammate while in Arizona -- Ray Thompson.

Historically, it seems as though the longer a deal drags on, the less likely it will get done.

You are certainly right about that Jeff. I think Henry like any player is shopping himself for the best deal he can get. The more RB's that come off the board the more value he has. He of course must make his decision prior to the draft when teams who need RB,s will draft one.

Henry might be reluctant to sign if we draft a young RB. He had that same situation happen to him last year. Although I don't think Denny Green can make any promises if a guy like JJ Arrington falls to him, he has to take him regardless of Henry's deal.

What about the possibility of a 3 way deal whereby Shelton goes to TB for a second and 4th, and then the second to the Bills for Henry?

Very true but this could be adone deal and we don't know it. No trades can be made offical until March second...I believe.

Mark my words, Henry is going to be a Cardinal. The Cards need him and he is a work horse, IMO he's gotten a bad rep since the day he was drafted. Everyone makes mistakes and some things get blown way out of porportion when you're in the public eye. As long as we keep him away from Las Vegas we will be just fine.:D "Man builds you up to tear you down."
