I agree with what Jeff said.Green is taking control over all the nonsense being spewed by Buffalo.I'm sure Donohoe will come out today and say they are in no hurry to get a deal done and that yesterday they worked out Reggie Mckenzie,he looked good, and they would completely happy to sign him and plug him in at LT. :p

Key to all this is that we really don't know how Dennis Green's board sets up. Some of us are sure that Cadillac Williams is rated ahead of Rolle. Others feel that Rolle is rated ahead of all the other RB's. One or two feel Benson is rated higher than any of them. And today you see the War Room having us pass on Rolle in favor of PacMan.

As Jim Mora likes to say: "We may think we know, but we really don't know."

How that board lines up (and how Dennis and Rod use it) means everything.

- If they play it 100% straight-arrow and take the highest ranked player at #8, we'll either draft a RB and kill the deal with Buffalo or draft a CB or LB and keep that possibility open.

- Or if they believe that players rated within one or two points of one another are essentially rated "equal", they could take a little poetic license and probably draft a CB or LB (& not a RB) in the hope of doing the deal with Buffalo.

- Or (if there are four or five players we rate equally or close to equal at #8] we might try to trade down a few notches and then it becomes a matter of "who's left?" at #11 or thereabouts. Conceivably it could still be Benson (which would kill the deal). But it could just as easily be a LB like Ware or Merriman or a CB like PacMan or Rogers (which would keep the possibility of a deal open).

But it's all conjecture - and will be until we pick. "We may think we know..."

I was just wondering how everyone here interprets Dennis Green saying he will take the "best player available" in the draft. Is he (a) lying, (b) going to give special consideration to a CB or a RB if there is a current need for one on the roster, or (c) just as likely, not knowing who he thinks is the best player, to select Derek Johnson or Alex Smith, if available, instead of Jones, Rolle or Benson?

People continuously say we will take a CB or RB, but is that just based on our current needs?

Usually, there are a few holes on most teams that will allow you to do both, BPA and need. Also, BPA is subjective. It is probably more accurate to look at players in tiers and pick the one that will best make an impact on your team. JMO

However, let's say that the Cards have no weakness or needs going into a draft and the BPA is a QB when our time comes to pick. We will not draft 7 QBs. You have to spread them out. You need balance when you draft.

1) As long as we draft as high as we do Denny could easily do this. Every team put the players into groups and the BAP approach isn't to literally take THE best available. The BAP approach is to allways take a player from the highest ranking group.
This year there are about 12 players in the top group. We have two major need at RB and CB and the BAP approach would allow us the draft a CB or RB even if Rodger or Edwards are on the board (They're not, but it's the principle).
If all 3 CBs and all 3 RBs are gone at #8, however, the BAP prevents you from drafting the #4 CB (Fabian Washington), because he's from a lower ranking group of players. Then the pick would be DJ, Rodger et al.

3) There are some possibilities for trading Shelton besides Henry. Alex Barron is sliding and no longer an option for the Texans at #13, but not sliding enough to be there in the 2nd. Brown won't the in the 2nd either, so both quality OT will be gone in the late 1st round. The draft is very weak on Ots capable of playing LT, so the Texans and Bucs could very well offer their high 3rd rounder for Shelton (Both teams have two 3rd rounders), since he would be awesome value for a 3rd rounder given the weak draft class. We could reinvest that 3rd rounder in our OL by drafting on a quality RG there. Why not keep LJ then? Because LJ excels at LT and only at LT. He a good starter at LT, but only solid at RT and G.

But IMO the best value for Shelton is trading for Surtain, but I'm not sure G&G like his high contract demand.

Ya, this all makes a lot of sense...I guess we'll just have to keep playing the guessing game until we know for sure what the heck Mr. Green is thinking, lol

I guess this quote of Green answers my question. "If we did a trade for Travis Henry tomorrow, it would take us out of the market for any of those three young backs, and the risk is Travis is on a one-year deal."

Certainly he has only stated the obvious, but he makes it clear that he doesn't focus entirely on the "BPA" strategy.
