Not to fast.

Schefter is saying the report is complete crap.

nless people I have known for years are blatantly lying to me, Shanahan is not going to be the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs,” Schefter writes. “It is not happening. People can keep talking as if it is. But it is not. He will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009.”

Lets see who wins this pissing match between Schefter and Mort. Who ever loses will take a hit in the cred department.

I would bet the farm that Schefter is correct.

I would bet the farm that Schefter is correct.

He was the beat writter for the Broncos before his job with NFLN, he and Shanny are pretty tight. I would put my money on him as well.

If Mort is wrong this will hurt him becuase this will be like the 5th breaking news story in a row he will look completely foolish on.

Guys I watched the press conference when Pioli was hired.

He dosen't strike me as a guy what would hire Shanahan or Gruden.

He'd hire Bill Cowher maybe, Haley maybe, or someone else we don't know but he wouldn't hire Shanahan IMO.

ESPN has changed the story in regards to Shannahan. They now say that the Chiefs are targeting him but negotiations haven't started. It sounds more reasonable then the earlier report

Shanahan has NO shot at the KC job. It's probably going to be Haley as the offense has been offensive. I'll be shocked if it's anyone but Haley.

Edwards Out ... Shanahan In?

Put this speculation to bed: Herm Edwards won't return in Kansas City. Edwards was fired Friday. Sources told ESPN the Chiefs were close to a deal with Mike Shanahan to become coach.

This would be GREAT news. Haley staying would be awesome for us.

But as has been said before.... I trust Shefter over Mort. But I hope he's wrong.

First of all the Chiefs are better than their record. If they can get their O-Line functioning and get a competent QB that offense will be pretty good. They are loaded in the backfield. Their D has some young talent on it, they just need a coaching staff who can use the talent they have.

That said, Shanahan would be a horrible fit for them. He is out in Denver because he couldn't get a working defense. Why would a team who sucked largely because of their D want a coach who has been through 5 DCs in 4 years?

I'm not sure if Haley is a great fit either? I don't know if he has the style of offense that fits the talent they have on their roster.

I think the targets that make sense are based on people Pioli (probably spelled wrong, sorry if I "Bidwill'd it) is familiar with with.

So if I were to shoot two targets from the hip it'd be:

Haley
Ferentz

Both names cause me great stress. I've got nothing against KC, but I'd rather see the Cardinals and Hawkeyes keep their staff intact.

I would not be surprised if the new head coach is Kirk Ferentz. He and Pioli are very close having worked together years ago with the Browns. This will be interesting to watch.
