A new television drama about a teenager adjusting to surreal life in Palm Springs, Calif., actually will be filmed this fall in Avondale.
Shooting starts this month for Hidden Palms, which will start mid-season on the new CW network. Kevin Williamson, creator of the hit Dawson's Creek, is one of the show's executive producers.
The show's main stage will be at Hollywood Phoenix Studios, 2005 N. 103rd Ave., in Avondale, said David Drennon, a spokesman for the Arizona Department of Commerce. advertisement
"We're excited to have these types of projects come into the Valley, especially a series because each episode brings jobs into Arizona," Drennon said.
The show is being filmed in Arizona, not California, because the state offers tax incentives to filmmakers, reported the Desert Sun newspaper in Palm Springs. Filmmakers also do not have to comply with union restrictions in Arizona, which is a right-to-work state.
A job announcement on the Arizona Department of Commerce's film office Web site says Lionsgate Television, the show's producer, is accepting applications for cast and crew positions for Hidden Palms.
In the pilot, 15-year-old Johnny Miller is uprooted to Palm Springs with his mother and stepfather after his father commits suicide.
"As Johnny learns the secrets that lie just beneath the surface of this seemingly typical neighborhood, he and his family are forced to ask the question: How well do you really know the people who live right next door?" says a CW description of the pilot.
Hidden Palms is a mid-season replacement.
The CW network is a blend of the WB and UPN networks. Check local listings or cable provider for the right channel.
Hidden Palms stars Michael Cassidy, Taylor Handley, Amber Heard, Sharon Lawrence, D.W. Moffet, Gail O'Grady and Ellary Porterfield.
