HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Falmouth baseball starts season 2-0 for the 1st time in seven years

The Falmouth baseball team has started 2-0 for the first time since the 2017-18 season after a 7-2 win over Sandwich on Friday.

Josh Matta went seven innings and scattered six hits, struck out seven strikeouts, walked one and allowed no earned runs for the Clippers.

Falmouth had 11 hits which included hits off the bats of Jack Frostholm, Max Inman (two RBIs), Eathen Vecchione and Brody Palmer. Tre’Chaun Days, Connor Oliver, Brody Palmer, and David Velesig each contributed one RBI.

Braylon Heatley, James Lehane, Joe Coughlan, and Luke Morrison 1-4 each recorded a doiuble as their lone hit, while Ty Creighton and Drew Peters (one run scored) also collected a hit at the plate for Sandwich (0-2).

Baseball​


Monomoy 5, Bourne 3: The Sharks (1-0) handed the Canalmen (1-1) their first loss in their season opener.

Cam Polcwartek pitched five innings, struck out four and gave up no walks, and scored two runs at the plate for Bourne. James Moran-Rose finished in relief as he went two innings, allowed no hits or walks, and struck out two. Drew Kelley recorded a hit for the second straight game.

Bridgewater-Raynham 8, Barnstable 5: The Red Hawks (1-2) dropped their first road game of the season.

Softball​


Upper Cape 13, Barnstable 0: The Rams (2-) stayed undefeated on the early season as they handed the Red Hawks (1-3) their third straight loss.

Taysia Lopes struck out seven on the mound for Upper Cape. Lucy Pesta had recorded two put outs and scored three times on a walk, a double, and a single. Jaelynn Harraden caught a fly to center and scored twice on two singles. Meadow Diede had an RBI triple and threw a runner out at second on a caught stealing play. Rosalie Neville scored twice and made a nice catch on a pop fly to end the game.

Nauset 9, Nantucket 6: The Warriors (1-3) won their first game of the season, as the Whalers (0-3) lost their third straight.

Notre Dame Academy-Hing 14, Falmouth 2: The Clippers (0-2) fell in their home opener. Kaylee Shaw finished 2-for-4 with one double and a run scored, while Tenley Briggs went 1-for-3 with a run scored for Falmouth.

Monomoy 14, Bourne 1: The Sharks (2-0) have scored at least 14 runs in their first two games as they beat the Canalmen (0-3).

Sandwich 16, Dennis-Yarmouth 3: The Blue Knights improved to 3-1, while the Dolphins (1-1) lost their first game of the season.

The Sandwich offense was led by Capri Barber, (2-for-3, two RBIs), Mia Consalvi (2-for-4, two RBIs), Sofie Farrington (3-for-5, three RBIs), and Victoria Lott (3-for-4, two RBIs). Farrington won her third game as she struck out 12 batters.

Boys Lacrosse​


Monomoy 14, Mashpee 2: The Sharks (3-0) have won three straight to start their season as they beat the Falcons (2-2).

Aidan Stone led Monomoy's offense with four goals and an assist. Tamer Khalil (three assists), Brodie LaValley (one assist), Harry Michaud (three assists), and Jackson Rocco (three assists) each had a pair of goals. Isaiah Freeman and Chane Hamilton each had a goal and one assist. Jake Giorgio and Harry Beaumont had a combined 12 saves in net, while Jed Zimmerman and Cole Strzepek both played well defensively.

Martha’s Vineyard 9, Cardinal Spellman 3: The Vineyarders (2-1) defeated Cardinal Spellman for the second time this season.

Nauset 11, King Phillip Reg. 9: The Warriors (1-1) picked up their first win of the season.

Girls Lacrosse​


Barnstable 17, St. John Paul II 13: The Red Hawks (2-1) picked up their second win of the season as they beat the Lions (1-2).

Shelby Locascio (six goals, four assists, and five draw controls), Emelie Jonsson (three goals, three assists, nine draw controls), Caroline Curley (five goals), Claire Kayajan (three goals, one assist), and Giovanna DeToledo (one assist) led the offense for Barnstable. Brenna Mullin had 16 saves in goal.

Monomoy 16, Mashpee 6: The Sharks remain unbeaten at 3-0 as they beat the Falcons (2-3).

Tessa Gradzicki scored eight goals and added an assist to lead Monomoy. Sophia Chors (two goals), Paige Nash (two assists), Abrielle Long (three goals), Lucy Bates (four assists), Cass Manchuch (three goals, one assist), Mia Zimmerman (three assists), and Kapka Thompson (two assists) also contributed on offense. Morgan Willis had 10 saves in goal.

Cape Cod Academy 14, Sturgis West 0: The Seahawks (3-0) have only allowed four goals over their first three games. Quinn Powers had 16 draw controls, while Paige Fowler finished with six ground balls.

Ceci O'Connor had 23 saves for the Navigators (0-3) in the loss.

Boys Tennis​


Monomoy 5, Dennis-Yarmouth 0: The Sharks (2-0) remained unbeaten, while the Dolphins (0-3) stayed winless.

Roman Pavluchenko defeated Landon Richter in first singles (6-3, 6-0), Ryan Casey beat Collin Caron in second singles (6-4, 6-0), and Zach Shields won third singles (6-4, 6-2) over Michael O’Reilly for Monomoy.

Patrick McMahon and Blake Noonan defeated Aiden Carras and Ryan Clarkein first doubles (4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-6)), while Ethan Seufert and Thomas Hereford beat Matt Anderson and Ben Solaris in second doubles (6-0, 6-0) for the Sharks.

Bridgewater-Raynham 4, Barnstable 1: The Red Hawks (0-3) dropped their third straight match. Seymour Singh defeated Zach Foley in third singles (6-1, 6-0) for Barnstable.

Girls Tennis​


Sandwich 3, Randolph 2: The Blue Knights (1-3) picked up their first win of the season. Senja Kravitz beat Farah LaFontant in second singles (8-2) for Sandwich. Sadie Clarkin and Casey Pestelli beat Jennifer Akanken and Tricia Huynh in first doubles (9-8, (7-3)), while Tenley Rothera and Lauren Meyer beat Ashley Eche and Melissa Phan in second doubles (8-1).

Bridgewater-Raynham 5, Barnstable 0: The Red Hawks (0-2) dropped their second straight match tot start the season.

Cohasset 4, Mashpee 1: The Falcons (suffered) their first loss of the season. Mariele Henley remains unbeaten on the season as she won first singles 6-3, 6-2.

Monomoy 5, Dennis-Yarmouth 0: The Sharks (2-0) have started their season with two straight sweeps.

Hanadi Rezk defeated Tristin Bradford in first singles (6-0, 6-1), Ella Cutter beat Kedsang Givrang in second singles (6-0, 6-0), and Darcy Addison won third singles (6-1, 6-0) over Lia Marie Adams-Dejesus for Monomoy.

Cecelia Hand and Karina Khalsa defeated Maddy Burgess and Maddy Stewart in first doubles (6-1, 6-2), while Madison Mahfouz and Lauren la Selva beat Wiilasa Thompson and Aimee Teague in second doubles (6-3, 6-0).

Boys Volleyball​


Scituate 3, St. John Paul II 0: The Lions (0-1) dropped their season opener. Nicolas Barcelo (six kills, two digs), Ben Franco (two kills, seven assists, 11 digs), and Cullen Lynch (two aces, one kill, four digs) led the way for JPII.

Barnstable 3, Millis 2: The Red Hawks (1-1) picked up their first win of the season.

Girls Golf​


Nauset 3 ½, Falmouth 2 ½: The Warriors (1-0) kicked off their season with a win over the Clippers (0-2). Sophia Silvestri, Finley WIlliams, Lucy Keegan and Lilah Baer picked up wins for Nauset.

Olivia Frigon, Sara Valle, and Hadley Viera recorded wins for Falmouth, while Hope Kelleher (Falmouth) tied with Leah Brown (Nauset).
