It was a rousing start to the season for the Mashpee girls lacrosse team on Thursday.
The Falcons (1-0) beat Sturgis East (0-1), 18-9, in the opener for both teams.
Ciara Hendricks (four goals and two assists), Kia Christo (two goals, one assist), Claire Howard (two goals), Skyler Hickey (three goals, one assist), Alanna McDonald (one goal, one assist), Riley Thomas (two goals, one assist), Aryana Cuozzo (one goal), and Sophia Morin (three goals) paced the offense for Mashpee.
Cuozzo played well on defense, and McDonald recorded her first-ever varsity goal and assist as an eighth grader. Morin won over 60 percent of the draws.
In other high schools sports action:
Archbishop Williams 14, St. John Paul II 1: The Lions (0-1) lost their first game of the season. Parker Philbrick scored his first varsity goal in the loss.
Mansfield 17, Nauset 16 (OT): The Warriors (0-1) dropped their opener in overtime. Logan Poulin (four goals, two assists), Sawyer McCutchen (four goals), Jesse Peno (three goals, one assist), Joey Berardi (two goals, three assists), Oscar Escher (two goals), and Brendan Peno (one goal, one assist) accounted for the Warriors scoring.
Seekonk 13, Bourne 1: The Canalmen (0-1) lost their first game of the season.
Sandwich 13, Nauset 0 (5 inn.): The Blue Knights (1-0) took the season opener for both teams. Seventh grader Sophie Farrington had the start in the circle for the Blue Knights and struck out 11 batters. She only allowed two hits and did not walk any batters.
Lane Kraihanzel went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Capri Barber had two hits with two runs scored. Vicky Lott, Abby McCartin (three runs), and Amaya Balboni all scored at least two runs.
For Nauset, freshman pitcher Brynn Kew struck out seven batters.
Martha's Vineyard 5, Sandwich 0: The Vineyarders (1-0) swept the Blue Knights (0-1) in the first match of the season.
Falmouth 3, Nauset 1: The Clippers took the season opener for both teams.
Nantucket 4, Old Rochester 1: The Whalers won in their first regatta of the season.
Monomoy 6, Dennis-Yarmouth 0: The Sharks won their opener over the Dolphins. Ava LaRocco (2-up), Emily Layton (5 and 4), Fiona Moore (5 and 3), and Ashley Anderson (4 and 3) won their matches.
