Jacksonville Jaguars' head coach Liam Coen met with the media at the NFL's annual league meeting on Monday.
In case you missed it, here are the highlights from the roughly 30-minute interview.
- Coen says that he and GM James Gladstone have spent just about every waking minute together the last few weeks preparing for the draft. Coen adds that Gladstone's ability to break things down makes it all so simple.
- Coen says that Gladstone's process for the draft has been so organized, and mentioned the Jaguars having two buckets of players within each round that are on their radar. They've also had conversations about players who maybe weren't on the Rams' board but could be of interest to the Jaguars with Coen.
- Coen said that putting his coaching staff together took up the most of his time early on. He mentioned over the years putting together a coaches' depth chart, so he had an idea of who he wanted on his staff, but there is a recruiting element to it, trying to show why that coach should join his staff.
- Coen says that Robert Hainsey took personal the Bucs' run game struggles in previous seasons before Coen's arrival, and he was one of the voices in that offensive line room that stood out as a leader. Coen adds that he does things the right way, communicates at a high level, and when on the field, he plays really hard.
- Coen mentions the "illusion of complexity," which he learned while with the Rams, which means having similar plays but ones that look quite differently to keep defenses off balance.
- Coen mentions the value of player input. One example he provided was Mike Evans explaining how he runs a route, so not only does Coen have a better understanding, but the other receivers in the room do as well.
- "Mentally and physically tough guys that love to play," said Coen about the type of players that the Jaguars are looking for. "They're just loving to compete," Coen adds that the Bucs' rookie class in 2024 came from really good college programs that helped them get onboarded quickly.
- Coen says in Phase I, they'll introduce the system but also the culture he wants to establish.
- Coen says he's had really good conversations with Trevor Lawrence. "He's hungry."
- "It's to and through the whistle," said Coen about how Jourdan Lewis competes. He recalled a play last season where it looked like the Bucs had thrown a touchdown pass against Dallas late, but Lewis ripped the ball away for an interception. "He's completely what we were looking for."
- Coen says they've got competition and depth along the offensive line and players who will help elevate the floor of that unit, but adds, let's see how things unfold when the Jaguars get on the practice field.
- Coen notes Brenton Strange's ability to break tackles and pick up yards after the catch, along with playing through the whistle and impacting the game as a blocker.
- "Always hard letting go of good football players," said Coen about Evan Engram and Christian Kirk. "Those were not easy decisions."
- Coen says that Dyami Brown can attack the field at all three levels, and he has an ability to make defenders miss.
