With the Jacksonville Jaguars having a first year head coach, the team--and all other organizations with a first year head coach--are able to get a jump start on voluntary offseason programs, which began on Tuesday, April 8th.
During this first portion of offseason programs, teams are not permitted to be on the practice field. According to NFL.com, activities during Phase I of offseason programs include meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehab.
So, without actual football to be played just yet, what does head coach Liam Coen want to get out of this portion of the offseason?
"Right now we're trying to establish two things--the fundamentals and techniques of the schemes," Coen said on Wednesday. "We're not truly diving into the scheme at the moment.
"Fundamentals and technique and then as well our culture. The way that we are going to play the game, our style of play. Those are the two things that we would like to get out of this, especially in Phase I when you're not on the grass with the players."
Coen would go on to mention that the team held a specific meeting focused solely on the play style that he wants the Jaguars to have. He then added that the toughness element that he wants throughout the organization can still be implemented in how the Jaguars go through meetings and their day-to-day work.
There was also a meeting about culture that not only included the football team but everyone--all departments--within the building as well, so that all are on the same page and operating in unison from that perspective.
With a new coaching staff and general manager, before being able to fully dive into the on-field component, the Jaguars have to start with installing a proper foundation in order to give everything else the best chance of succeeding.
"We're really installing our basic core fundamentals and principles and techniques, and then also the culture, our style of play and our commitments as well," Coen added.
