Back in 2003 there was a hilarious on air incident involving the Cardinals. They had traded the #6 overall pick for the 2 #1’s later in the round. With the 17th pick, they selected Bryant Johnson and there was some on air snickering with the pick. Then came pick #18 and they select Calvin Pace. The initial reaction was an awkward pause as you see the announcers shuffling to find the bio on Pace. The best part is right before commercial break you see Denny Green lean over to Mel Kiper and ask “who the hell is Calvin Pace?” Kiper is laughing uncontrollably. It was awesome!!

Sounds about right with this team.

Pace was okay but the Cards were trying to stretch their limited funds to fill 2 holes, which caused the to essentially trade Terrell Suggs, a perennial Pro Bowler. Johnson & Pace we’re decent players but Suggs was worth 10 of them. A typical Dollar Bill frugal move.

What's funny is that draft still turned out pretty good.

Pace was a good 3-4 backer once he was used there.

Anquan Boldin is a likely hall of famer.

Gerald Hayes was a really good 2 down ILB.

Calvin Pace did end up playing 13 years and had a decent career.....for the Jets! Not a 1st rounder, but wasn't terrible once he found the right system!

Wait until we draft Johnson's son in two years, everyone who was on this board when we drafted his dad will feel old!! He's a WR at Cincinnati.

Had zero to do with frugality.

Terrell Suggs would not have been drafted at all by the Cardinals because of the assault which took place shortly before the draft (March 2003). Eventually (December 2003), he was charged with felony assault for hitting a man in the face with some rebar. It took two years (June 2005) for him to be cleared as a jury could not find him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
