As the free-agency contact period opens Tuesday, the Suns will not have the spending capability that Detroit wields or the lure of a title contender that attracts more talent with less money.
What the Suns have is their top target,Grant, putting them atop his list, and the hope that they can land a veteran big man such as Antonio McDyess or Joe Smith.
Free agency begins at midnight in the East, opening the gates for contact at 9 p.m. Phoenix time.
Hill, a Suns forward the past two years, can expect a visit to his Orlando home Wednesday from Suns General ManagerKerr. Hill will have as many questions about the Suns' direction as Kerr does about Hill's intentions.
"I look forward to talking to Steve and getting a feel for things and what's going on with my role," Hill said. "I sure would like to stay. It's been like home. We've enjoyed being there."
Hill was a top bargain the past two seasons at salaries of $1.83 million and $1.97 million, a contract he signed in 2007 as the Suns' biennial exception. They can't use that exception on him again so they might have to use a portion of the mid-level exception (about $5.6 million) to keep Hill, who will be 37 in October but played every game last season for the first time in his career. Thirty NBA players appeared in 82 games with only Hill, Andre Miller, Derek Fisher and Kobe Bryant doing so in their 30s.

Good Lord. Enough with the geriatric contract extensions please...
Just another over the "Hill" starter taking heavy minutes away from the youngsters that we ought to be putting into leadership roles and developing.
I like Grant Hill. I appreciate Grant Hill. I don't want him back.
The #1 priority in FA? Are you serious?!

I am however, interested to hear anyone's thoughts on the pro's and cons of bringing Grant Hill back.

I would put Hill as Nr. 2 priority. Now we need a big man like McDyess or Joe Smith. Hill has been great the last 2 years and if hes willing to stay here for reasonable money then it should do no harm for the Suns.

Free Hill! Seriously, the Suns won't start to rebuild if he plays 30mns per game, and he deserves a last shot at the title with another team.

Hill has more than earned a contract extension. His play has not been a disappointment. However, when one adds in McDyess and Joe Smith one does start to think geriatric. Nash adds age to the team as well.

I hope no one will be offended if I use this quote (paraphrase):

"Don't judge us by our team now. Judge us by our team in [November].

And by the way, why can't the Suns use the biannual exception again? Is there some rule that says you can't use it on the same player twice in a row?

Joe Smith would be okay, but if this organization acquires McDyess for the third time after having been dumped by him twice, that may be the final straw for me.

The Suns have the biannual they can use, they just can't use it on Hill. You cant use the biannual on the same player twice in a row.

I love Hill, but I'd rather see him move on. I'd like Dudley and Clark to get time at the 3. Playing Hill 30 minutes a game does nothing for us long term.

If I was Hill I run to a team with a shot at a title. Also, how does signing Hill help our other players develop? I can understand keeping Hill if this team is a title contender but we are not. Hill in the short time he has been here has become one of my favorite Suns players but it's time to move on.

should acquire Villanueva or Wilcox instead. Or maybe Frye. Suns are thin upfront

The Suns have the best medical staff in the NBA and I think Hill just wants to play basketball, which he is extremely passionate about. Not sure if winning is really a priority for him. He's not a stat padder either, he just wants to ball.

Some of you really overrate our medical staff. Where were they when Penny and Googs were in town?

Rejuvenating Shaq is by far their biggest accomplishment. He was almost at the point of return and he was able to become an all star next year. Not gonna be remotely close in Cleveland. Phx took good care of him.

Some say Shaq was sulking in Miami, and not that injured. He was playing in Phoenix pretty quickly after he was traded.
