Well, you can have the old man, I prefer the younger Roberts and our three T-ends when it comes time to covert a short third down.

He was virtually begging to stay in Pitt, and they said no thanks. What does that say?

H. W. 8.3 yards per reception.

I don't put too much stock in that because the Steelers can be notoriously cheap and we don't know how much Hines was asking for to stay. Also, I watched most of their games this season and they simply were not using a 3rd receiver. However, in crunch situation when they needed a catch on 3rd down they had him playing.

That says to me they wanted him in there during crucial situations.

Well, I watch them too. He was a shadow of what he once was, and wouldn't spend a penny on him. Aaron Smith, who has just been released is a different story IMO. I'd like him as a DE backup.

He's done Daren. Did you see him play last year? Rich Eisen may have a faster 40 ;)

Pitt is not notoriously cheap. In the top 5 in salary last year, and are in the top 10 in a consistent basis. There is a reason why they were a horrid cap situation this year, a situation they got out of pretty easily by restructuring a lot of players this year with a lot of up front money.

Second, they didn't know how much Ward was willing to play for because Ward himself said he was never even asked to take a pay cut. They didn't even ask him to take the vet min of about 950k.

Third, your perception of Pitt using him in crunch time just doesn't jive with the facts. Had a total of 8 catches on 3rd down last year.

1st down percentages:

Doucet - 65%
Andre Roberts - 57%
Jeff King - 48%
Hines Ward - 43%

Hines Ward is only a shell of his former self. It's sad because he was special.

I didn't say they ultimately did not spend money. BC after he left Pitt said one of the biggest challenges was getting them to spend money. He said they would do it but it was always a fight. It was never just a matter of paying a guy.

Well....they figured a guy of his tenure wouldn't play for the minimum why would they? Obviously Ward was not willing to either because I don't recall him saying he was willing to play for the min but maybe I missed it.

Maybe it was just a perception thing. I remember at times when the Steeler's were struggling to move the ball they would throw him in there and run him down the middle between the zone in the games I watched.
