It would be a lot easier to relax if the guy the Cards signed to replace Rolle wasn't reported to be a poor tackler.

The horrendous tackling by the Cards secondary was really something I hoped they'd improve this off season. Looks like they just traded one guy who couldn't tackle for another.

However, they did save several million dollars so its not too bad.

5 missed tackles vs 15 (according to another post)

Do you have a stat for any starting safety last season who did not miss a tackle?

If we are going to give up a Third (and with Miami now having an ILB this is a plausible scenario if we get in front of Pitt) I want to get the best prospect in McClain. ILB's always drop for one reason or another and despite his nice combine showing, I expect Weatherpoon to be their at #26.

Still I am really torn between a stud NT or the right ILB. I guess it depends on whom is available when we pick.

I agree. Now on to more important issues. Bring back the old avatar!!!!!!

I get you miss Q and all but dude.

Your just spewing sour grapes now. We upgraded the position and saved money.

Duck, Rolle was a poor tackler as well... we upgraded with a guy who tackles the same but is an actual true centerfielder in coverage... and for MUCH cheaper. Unless we were going to sign the best S in the league or traded for one, who would have cost a ridiculous sum of money, you're bitching here sounds just like that... bitching. You know I love ya, but this was a solid upgrade at a great price which will allow to continue to fill holes on this club that need filling.

To split hairs, there's poor tackling and there's poor tackling.

With Rolle, it had more to do with taking poor angles, not being where he should be and not breaking down particularly well (i.e. I saw no reluctance to stick his nose in there).

What's the deal with Rhodes? (i.e. was the purported poor tackling due to poor angles, failure to wrap up, failure to break down properly, unwillingness to hit or what? Equally important - can the problem be coached out of him)?

Sorry, no sour grapes. Rolle was never one of my guys. Just don't like what I read about this guy Rhodes tackling skills.

I think the secondary's horrendous tackling was the #1 problem with the Cardinal defense. Getting another guy for the secondary who reportedly can't tackle does nothing to change that. You don't have to sign the best S in the league just a guy who can play and not have his #1 weakness be tackling.

I will admit to not having my scouting hat on when watching Jets games. What I can tell you is that he flashed and made an impression on me. I said to myself "I would love if the Cards had Rhodes, that's what we are missing". Now that was a couple of years ago when he first made that impression on me so he may have regressed a bit. It's just that I watch a decent number of Jets games every year (wife is a fan) and Rhodes hasn't done anything to make me say "Wow does he such at tackling". Every year I see him make plays and think we could use him. I've seen him lay the wood to people. I've seen him break up passes and make interceptions.

Jets must have liked him a lot because they re-signed/extended him fairly early in his career and to a very nice contract.

If Rhodes can improve our coverage skills and take away the oppositions TE then this was a HUGE upgrade.

I don't recall our FS covering the TE very often. That was usually assigned to one of the LBs or Wilson wasn't it? Maybe with Rhodes the Cards plan to change that since he also has a rep for having been very good at covering the better TEs in the league.

I still wish that he was reported as being at least average at tackling.

Pre-Whiz, panic would be in order.

Post-Whiz, panic IMO is never in order.

I'm pretty sure Whiz carries enough clout to retain who he wants to retain and cut loose who he wants.

It'll be alright.

I'm still not sold on the current staff's abilities on the defensive side. It only took KWhisenhunt a half season to get the offense to the top of the NFL. The defense meanwhile is no better than it was when he was hired. Just look at all the people saying it doesn't matter who leaves on the defensive side because the defense was terrible.

However, I do understand how difficult it is to build great squads on both sides of the ball with the salary cap and free agency. Very few teams in the NFL have both so I'll go along with you, trust in Whiz, and wait and see.

Can't argue. I just don't remember seeing him whiff on tackles.

Well maybe Shane was right but was accusing the wrong person of spouting sour grapes. Maybe its the Jets fans doing what the Cards fans are doing bashing a good player who is going somewhere else.

A fairly common trait among NFL football fans.
