STUART — The Latta Panthers got the potential game-tying run at third base in the top of the seventh inning before the rally attempt fell short in a 4-3 loss to Stuart in a Tuesday night road game.
Latta, ranked No. 4 in Class 2A-1, fell to 8-3, while Class B No. 3 Stuart stayed unbeaten at 5-0.
Coach Dillon Atkinson’s club now heads to the Dibble Baseball Tournament and will meet the Vanoss-Cashion JV winner at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Stuart 4, Latta 3
Carter Freeze reached base on a one-out single to get Latta started in the top of the seventh inning. Kaiden Goolsby then walked before Landon Fortner hit into a fielder’s choice that left LHS runners at the corners with two outs.
However, Stuart relief pitcher Nolan Stewart got out of the jam and earned a save with a game-ending strikeout.
Latta erased an early 1-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the third inning. Reese Littlefield did most of the damage for Latta in the inning. He cracked a two-RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch to put the visitors on top 3-1.
The Hornets responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning. T Wimberly put Stuart back on top with a two-run double.
Neither team scored again.
Goolsby got the start for the Panthers. He struck out three, walked two and surrendered three earned runs in four innings. Ryder Perry tossed two scoreless innings of relief. He struck out one, didn’t walk a batter and allowed just two hits.
Barlett Paterson was the starter for the Hornets. He struck out three with no walks and allowed three earned runs in four innings. Cody Cook picked up the win after two scoreless innings of relief.
Latta finished with six total hits, led by Darien Miller who went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Stuart collected five hits with Wimberly leading the way with a 3-for-3 effort that included two stolen bases.
Allen edges Tupelo in 8 innings
TUPELO — The Allen High School baseball team scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to slip past Tupelo 8-6 in a matchup between the two local teams Tuesday night.
The Mustangs, ranked No. 16 in Class A-1, improved to 6-3, while Tupelo — No. 14 in Class B – is off to a 0-5 start to the season.
Coach Chat Hayes’ Mustang club is scheduled to host Class B No. 10 Moss at 5 p.m. Friday. Things won’t get any easier for the Tigers, who face Class 3A powerhouse Silo at 1 p.m. Thursday as part of the Rattan Spring Classic.
Allen 8, Tupelo 6

Tupelo trailed 6-2 before rallying with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game and force extra innings. Nate Medcalf’s RBI single capped the four-run THS volley. The Tigers had runners at first and second before Allen got out of the jam with the game knotted at 6-all.
Mason Carter led off the top of the eighth inning for the Mustangs with a base hit and walks to Alex Hill and Bodee Garrett loaded the bases. Landin Tenequer then knocked in a pair of runs with a base hit to give Allen an 8-6 lead.
Allen relief pitcher Kale Horton retired the side in the bottom of the eight to earn the mound win. He struck out one with no walks and allowed two earned runs in three innings.
The Mustangs collected six hits in the game, including doubles by Noah Bray and Jax Wakins, who finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Tenequer drove in three runs for the Mustangs and Carter walked and scored twice for the visitors.
Garrett walked three times and scored a run for Allen.
Tupelo also had six hits, including a 2-for-3 effort by Cash Wafford that included a double, an RBI and a run scored. Aiden Walkup went 1-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for the hosts and Cash Wainscott ended up 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.
Tupelo sent five pitchers to the mound and they combined for five strikeouts, seven walks and a hit batter.
The Tigers had four errors in the game and Allen committed three.
Whippets end Konawa’s win streak
VARNUM — The Konawa Tigers’ impressive start to the season came to a screeching halt with a 10-0 road loss to Varnum Tuesday night.
Coach Tyler Douhit’s team ranked No. 6 in Class 2A-2, saw its season-opening nine-game win streak come to and end. The Whippets, No. 16 in Class B, improved to 8-4.
The Tigers now head to the Central High Red Dirt Classic where they’ll battle Fletcher at 4 p.m. Thursday in a first-round matchup.
Varnum 10, Konawa 0
Varnum hurler Payton Romines kept the Konawa offense in check. He struck out one, walked two and allowed just four hits in the four-inning victory.
Three KHS hurlers had trouble finding the strike zone. They combined for one strikeout and 10 walks. Konawa was also charged with two errors.
Tyler Whitley, Moses Isaacs, Jamarcus Brooks and Hayden Moore all had base hits for the visitors.
Romines led Varnum at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Devyn Fullbright, Jon Madkins and Kyle Navrath all had hits and drove in runs for the Whippets.
Wright City turns back Asher
WRIGHT CITY — Wright City pushed across four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Asher 10-7 in a back-and-forth affair Tuesday night.
Asher, ranked No. 4 in Class B, dropped to 5-4, while Wright City — No. 2 in Class A-1 — improved to 10-2.
The Indians now head to the Caney Tournament where they’ll battle Hartshorne — No. 14 in Class 2A-1 — at 4 p.m. Thursday in a first-round matchup.
Wright City 10, Asher 7
The Indians trailed 6-0 early but came roaring back.
Asher scored a single run in the top of the fifth inning and pushed across six runs in the top of the sixth frame to surge to a 7-6 lead.
But the Lumber Jax rallied in the bottom of the sixth to snag the win.
Asher managed just four hits in the contest, including a double by Hudson Skender who went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Raygan Kuhlman finished 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored and Beau Willis walked twice and went 1-for-2 with a run scored for the Indians.
Rayner Beene paced the Lumber Jax at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored. Braxton Hickman went 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs scored. He belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning that put the hosts ahead 3-0.
Kase Lindly finished 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, an RBI and two runs scored for the home team.
Lindly was the starting pitcher for Wright City. He struck out seven, walked three and didn’t allow a run in 2.1 innings. Beene struck out six and didn’t allow a hit in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Five Asher hurlers combined for one strikeout and nine walks.
