Yet, when we asked the Steelers to talk to Bulter, and we were told to pound sand it is OK ?

I guess the double standard of the NFL applies there. It is OK if the Big Names do what it takes to win, but when one of the bottom feeders do it is a, "HOW DARE THEY!" situation.

dude... we were looking at Butler for a coordinator position... the Rams are looking at Horton for a HEAD COACHING position. There's no comparison.

So who does Jax Jags get and who believes the rumor that the new owner of the Jags moves them to St Louis while the Rams move to Los Angeles?
There's talk in the Columbus papers that Tressel is a candidate for the Jax job.

from the Dispatch:
Jim Tressel’s name is popping up in talks about coaching positions in the NFL, and insiders say he may be a serious candidate for the Tampa Bay job. Tressel’s only pro experience came this season when he served as a replay consultant for the Indianapolis Colts. The NCAA hit the former Ohio State coach with a show-cause penalty that would make it difficult for any college program to hire him for five years.
The Colts also were rumored to be interested in Tressel as a coach, but his chances likely diminished when Colts vice chairman Bill Polian and his son, general manager Chris Polian, were fired.
Tressel has also been named as a possible candidate for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ job. The Colts finished the regular season in Jacksonville last weekend and, because the Buckeyes were there preparing for the Gator Bowl, several Ohio reporters planned to talk with Tressel after the game, but he left without talking to the media.

Good perspective from Sando

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/56599/on-the-rams-interviewing-division-rivals

Defensive coordinator Ray Horton isn't the only Arizona Cardinals employee expected to interview with the St. Louis Rams this offseason. Steve Keim, director of player personnel, has surfaced as a candidate on the general manager front, according to Mike Jurecki of XTRA Sports 910 in Phoenix.

This is good strategy by the Rams even if they're still focusing primarily on hiring Jeff Fisher as head coach and a Fisher-vetted candidate for GM. The team gets a chance to learn more about its rivals in the division -- rivals that went 6-0 against St. Louis this season and 20-4 against the Rams since 2007.

The Rams would be wise to check out other candidates in the division as well. San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman and Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley are two assistants I would investigate. Both have overseen units that have gone young over the last few seasons. The 49ers' overall success under Jim Harbaugh should make Roman appealing. Seattle's defensive improvement has been striking.

Makes sense.

I don't think Horton gets hired by the Rams. I'd put the odds at about 15%. I think Fisher takes the job.

I thought the same thing. From secondary coach to head coach in two years seems like quite the precipitous rise.

I'm pretty sure ya'll can relax with Ray Horton hears a who?

I'm hearing that Miami denied the Rams permission to interview Todd Bowles. I'm trying to find confirmation of that....if so i think this is clearly a satisfaction of the Rooney rule like some of you have said.

I read that in Darren Urban's recent article. Sounds more and more like Horton is being interviewed to satisfy the Rooney rule and to pick the brain of a division rival coach. I'm really not as concerned as many are, but rather flattered that he is attracting attention. Means he's getting the job done.

I think you guys land Fisher.

I agree that its a formality because i'm pretty sure that Miami's Todd Bowles never was allowed to interview...probably a stall tactic by Miami to force the Rams to look elsewhere in order to buy them(Miami) time in luring Fisher.

Per Jim Thomas: @jthom1
Rams interview went well with Arizona defensive coordinator Ray Horton. Team sources say he was impressive.

I dont know TJ,something in my gut tells me that Fisher wont end up in St Lou....i hope he does though.

Even if we lose Horton, doesn't it look like DeShea Townsend could step up to the DC role? He played in that defense since 98 and got to see how Horton coached it this year. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Whis promoted him, especially since the secondary really improved over the course of the year.

Definitely agree that it's the Rooney rule in effect. However, I don't think it's so that they can pick Horton's brain. Nothing like that in my opinion, it's not like Horton is going to give away anything. I think the reason Whisenhunt gave him permission to interview is so that Horton could--sounds dumb--be interviewed.

It's a practice run interview for a head coaching job. He isn't going anywhere, but he gets free experience interviewing for a head coaching job he (Horton) may want down the line.

I love the fact that Whis wants what's best for his football team, the players, assistant coaches, etc. I'm sure he hated losing Haley, but they're friends and he gave permission for Haley also. He encourages all his coaches to test the market, from what he's said himself, to see their value and to test their worth and their improvement.

The sign of success for a leader is when you can improve dudes and move them to more lucrative endeavors.

That being said, Horton isn't going anywhere, but it was cool that he got to interview for a job that he may want (not necessarily with the Rams) down the line. It's a test run, and I'm sure he learned alot about the process.
