If anyone knows what Ike Diogu went through during his basketball career at Arizona State, it's Eddie House.

Like Ike, House never had trouble putting points on the board — but almost always had trouble getting any scoring help. One night, House scored a school-record 61 points against California, and the Sun Devils still needed double-overtime to beat the Bears.

“Yeah, it would have been nice if we could have been at ASU at the same time,'' said a grinning House, who held the school's all-time scoring record until Diogu broke it last season. “But we both would have wanted to wear No. 5, so there might have been a little problem, you know? The power was in the number.''

Now back playing basketball in Arizona with the Suns, House has to yield on wearing No. 5 — the long-retired jersey of the original Sun, Dick Van Arsdale. But there won't be any yield signs from coach Mike D’Antoni when it comes to doing what House does best on the basketball court — shoot the rock.

On that score, House has been given the green light.

“We score a lot of points and he scores a lot of points, so he should be a perfect match,'' D’Antoni said. “I've already told Eddie that I won't take him out of the game for shooting too much . . . although I might take him out for missing too much.''

The Suns like what they've seen so far from House, who played for three NBA teams (Charlotte, Milwaukee and Sacramento) last season but hopes to have found a home after signing a free agent contract for the veteran minimum.
Despite the constantly changing uniforms and systems, House set career highs in overall shooting (.451) and 3-point shooting percentage (.454), and with the loss of shooters like Quentin Richardson and Joe Johnson and the need for instant offense off the bench, this situation seems tailor-made.

“This is a great opportunity and I want to try to seize the moment and have fun with it,'' said House, who hit four of his seven shots and contributed nine points to a 106-95 Suns win in Utah Monday night. “This team has big goals and I want to do everything I can to keep it pointed in the right direction.''

House put on some shooting exhibitions during training camp that had D’Antoni thinking House might fill that “closer'' role that Richardson played in spots last season. On nights when Richardson was particularly hot from 3-point range, the Suns often went from difficult to impossible to beat.

“He knows what he’s in there for, and he can get on some unbelievable rolls,'' D’Antoni said. “His minutes will depend on his shooting barometer. We'll put him out there every night and see if he’s on.''

:bang: D'Antoni needs a basic statistics course.

I am hoping that he just means that House will get some time every night, but how much time depends on his production. In other words, maybe he is expecting something like Hunter's time where he is on a short leash - but could wind up playing 25 minutes every now and again.

At least that is what I hope.

i wish he would have pulled Q for missing too much.

The problem with that thought is who was he supposed to replace him with last year?

At least this year we have options. (especially at the wings)

In my opinion we won't miss JJ or Q's three point shooting with House and Jones on board, in essence we just saved alot of money by losing JJ and Q, sounds like a Geico commercial,

That's what I had hoped out of Eddie House, though. He's someone you bring in for a few minutes and see if he's hot. If he is, you take it all the way to the bank and he'll score fifteen or twenty points for you. Other times, he could just be hot enough to be marginally better than Barbosa or Diaw and he'll get those minutes. But if he comes out cold out of the gate, you just park him on the bench the rest of the game.

He's somebody you don't rely on, but you just check him out every game and see if he's hot.

The problem with this approach is that "hot" is defined by what you've already done, not by what you're about to do. If he makes two of his first three, he was "hot" then, but there's no objective reason to believe that he's any more likely to make his next shot than if he missed his first three. It's like a slot machine -- if you win on your first few pulls, is the machine "hot"? (Answer: No.)

Like any shooter, House will have games when he "starts hot" and then "cools off," and other games that go the other way (provided, of course, that he continues to get any time if he starts with a few misses). What he does with his first few shots won't be a useful indicator for what he's going to do next.

I think we are looking waaay to much into this. Bottom line i expect Eddie to win us a couple games this year becasue he goes absolutly nuts from outside and pours in 20+ that we were not counting on. Other nights he will se DNP-CD. Either way its a nice luxury to have a good shooter coming off the bench ala Dale Ellis (in his later years) or Wes Person. I fully expect him to contribute in a roll much like those players. I wouldn' t count on him for too much else though......

As long as House is taking good shots and not forcing them I don't have a problem if he misses some from the start.

If he starts trying to go 1 on 1 and forcing contested shots sit him down immediately.

My untutored sense is that Eddie House=Tony Delk Part II. Am I wrong?

So we're going to trade him for Joe Johnson?
