If anyone knows what Ike Diogu went through during his basketball career at Arizona State, it's Eddie House.
Like Ike, House never had trouble putting points on the board — but almost always had trouble getting any scoring help. One night, House scored a school-record 61 points against California, and the Sun Devils still needed double-overtime to beat the Bears.
“Yeah, it would have been nice if we could have been at ASU at the same time,'' said a grinning House, who held the school's all-time scoring record until Diogu broke it last season. “But we both would have wanted to wear No. 5, so there might have been a little problem, you know? The power was in the number.''
Now back playing basketball in Arizona with the Suns, House has to yield on wearing No. 5 — the long-retired jersey of the original Sun, Dick Van Arsdale. But there won't be any yield signs from coach Mike D’Antoni when it comes to doing what House does best on the basketball court — shoot the rock.
On that score, House has been given the green light.
“We score a lot of points and he scores a lot of points, so he should be a perfect match,'' D’Antoni said. “I've already told Eddie that I won't take him out of the game for shooting too much . . . although I might take him out for missing too much.''
The Suns like what they've seen so far from House, who played for three NBA teams (Charlotte, Milwaukee and Sacramento) last season but hopes to have found a home after signing a free agent contract for the veteran minimum.
Despite the constantly changing uniforms and systems, House set career highs in overall shooting (.451) and 3-point shooting percentage (.454), and with the loss of shooters like Quentin Richardson and Joe Johnson and the need for instant offense off the bench, this situation seems tailor-made.
“This is a great opportunity and I want to try to seize the moment and have fun with it,'' said House, who hit four of his seven shots and contributed nine points to a 106-95 Suns win in Utah Monday night. “This team has big goals and I want to do everything I can to keep it pointed in the right direction.''
House put on some shooting exhibitions during training camp that had D’Antoni thinking House might fill that “closer'' role that Richardson played in spots last season. On nights when Richardson was particularly hot from 3-point range, the Suns often went from difficult to impossible to beat.
“He knows what he’s in there for, and he can get on some unbelievable rolls,'' D’Antoni said. “His minutes will depend on his shooting barometer. We'll put him out there every night and see if he’s on.''
