Nobody really knows if Dennis Dixon will be any good as a pro.

First round flops like Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith and many others and later round success stories like David Garrard, Tom Brady and Derek Anderson attest to that. Then throw in an UFA pro-bowler like Tony Romo to really prove the theory that arguing a player's correct relative draft position is meaningless.

And there are many, many other names I can't think of right now and don't want to bother to research.

I do know the 2006 first round QB triumvirate of Vince Young, Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler is showing signs of flopicitis, although it is still a year or maybe two years too early to tell.

Conversely, the 2004 group of Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger and JP Losman is stunningly good, with only Losman a flop.

The 2005 crop looks shaky and the 2004 group of Carson Palmer, Byron Leftwich, Kyle Boller and Rex Grossman is only saved from atrociousness by Palmer.

So wax eloquent in statements of certainty, if you wish, but know ye that history is against you.

I think it makes it less of a priority, but St. Pierre is not very good. At all. He has a career passer rating of 39.6 and -3 career rushing yards. He couldn't beat out Charlie Batch or Tommy Maddox for roster spots.

I mean, he's maybe better than Tim Rattay or Tim Hasselback, but he doesn't have a future in the NFL and could be beaten out by a late-round pick or maybe an undrafted rookie FA.

DC, he's had a total of 5 plays in the NFL. Four runs and one passing attempt. You can't draw any conclusions from that.

I was hoping they'd keep Rattay. I think he can play if given a chance.

You can draw the conclusion that none of the three head coaches nor two franchises that St. Pierre has played for wanted him anywhere near the football field for them. Even in the preseason. That has to say something.

Here's Brian St. Pierre's stats from the last game he played: http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter?game_id=29171&displayPage=tab_gamecenter&season=2006&week=PRE4

1/4 for 8 yards.

Before that: http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter?game_id=29153&displayPage=tab_gamecenter&season=2006&week=PRE3

3/4 for 24 yards. And an INT.

Before that: http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter?game_id=29135&displayPage=tab_gamecenter&season=2006&week=PRE2

0/2.

I know that you don't believe that anything can be inferred from past experience, but there's a reason that this guy has only been on the field 5 downs in 5 NFL seasons.

I couldn't agree more. Thats why I laugh at some poeple on this board saying there is no chance this guy gets drafted there and his game doesn't translate to the pro game like its fact. All it takes is one player personel guy to fall in love with him and anything can happen.

You can't tell me that players like Ryan leaf didn't have the talent to play pro football, but talent only takes you so far.

DC, those are all pre-season games. He might have had the 3rd string team in that he was playing behind.

You have to remember that very few 3rd string QB's get to play in actual NFL games. Mop up jobs always go to the #2 guy. I find it hard to believe that Whis would go after him if he didn't think he might be able to do this team some good. You can't always go by stats alone.

Hey, maybe you're right. But didn't a lot of people on this board say the same thing about the last Steelers castoff QB that we had on the roster?

And there were some 12 teams that let their 3rd QBs on the field last season alone, including the Arizona Cardinals. You would think that if St. Pierre had any future in the league at all, the braintrusts in Pittsburgh or Baltimore would have felt like keeping him around, though.

Or he would have showed something in any of the numerous preseason games he's played in.

Right now it is something we just don't know. Like I said, I'd rather see us keep Rattay, but that isn't going to happen. Guess we'll just have to hope this kid can come through if we need him. I'm sure he'll get some work this pre-season. That might give us a little more to go on, but I've seen QB's look like world beaters during the pre-season and turn into jelly when the season starts.
