How about this kid as a return specialist?

From his pro day today:

Larry Beavers, a 5-10, 167-pound WR/KR from Wesley, ran the 40 in 4.37 and 4.43, had a 37-inch vertical jump, 10-foot, 1-inch long jump, 4.40 short shuttle, and 7.27 three-cone drill. Beavers was a phenomenal return specialist for Wesley — he had 10 career kickoff returns for touchdowns and three punt return TDs.

From Draft Scout:

He led Division III in kick return average at 39.5 and averaged over 29 yards per punt return. Beavers also started at receiver for the Wolverines, leading the team with 598 yards and tying for the team lead with 30 receptions and six touchdowns. Beavers ended his career with 2,366 receiving yards, second all-time at Wesley.

That's unbelievable. Too bad he's a WR and not a RB but if he's that good maybe he could be strictly a returner.

He played for Division 3, he will probably not get drafted, but as a UDFA or even 7th rounder I would consider him. We are in fact in the market for a returner now with JJ gone and Breaston earning solid time as a WR.

Anyone know anything else about this kid? Is he also a special teams gunner? Can he do anything besides return kicks?

A good return game is so important, these type of players are getting drafted much earlier these days. I wouldn't be surprised if he is drafted in the 3 or 4th round.

According to Wesley's season stats, he wasn't credited with a single tackle so I doubt he played on coverage units. At 5'10 167 (wow 167 is freakishly small) I'm not surprised though, but he caught 30 passes at a 19.9 per catch.

Division III punt returner. We thought OUR punt coverage was bad, I wonder how it is in Div III.

That said, you can't do much better than his stats. 39.5 average on kicks, and 29 on punt returns, wow.

Hopefully some video will surface sometime. Could be a sleeper with real talent, or might be a marginal potential nfl player playing getting fat stats in DIV III. Only time will tell.

Nobody runs a 4.3anything and doesn't get drafted.

Allen Rossum, Notre Dame, 5'8" (generous), 178 lbs (a lie) came into the league as a return specialist weighing 160 lbs 13 years ago and had a great career. Drafted in round 3 (85th pick) as a return specialist.

Some team may take a chance on Beavers. Interesting find, cgolden.

DeSean Jackson is listed at 175 but it wouldn't surprise me if he was around 165 too. I agree though if beavers can run someone may take a flyer on him.

Not to mention that I'm sure he lost some weight training for his Pro Day. I remember reading an article on DRC saying that he basically was at "track weight" for the combine and his pro day instead of "football weight."
