For the minimum... why not? Defensively and on the boards he's probably worse than Jake Voskuhl. Offensively he's quite a bit better despite his really mediocre numbers last season. He can knock down the open jumper.

He's definitely not a perfect fit, but I wouldn't give him anything more than the minimum.

We probably have enough scorers. We need someone who is mostly about rebounding and defense who also has some offense (ie KT). But perhaps for the minimum.

If you want a center for jacking up 3P's with poor percentage then just sign Drobnjak.

Otherwise just let other teams to destroy their chemistry and offense.

I don't want guys whose names I can't pronounce. Give me guys with simple names like Thomas and Bell.

Seriously, if we can't get someone better than Jake, then don't bother.

BTW, (immediately violating my prounciation requirement) I still think that getting Dikembe Mutombo for a one year deal is the most promising alternative. Last season he averaged 15.2 minutes a game for the Rockets, but averaged .3486 rebounds per minute which was 5th in the NBA. Hunter averaged .217. Mutombo also ranked 6th in the NBA in blocked shots per minute played.

Dikembe is not likely to be hugely concerned about the money. He's made a lot of it. If he's looking for a chance to go to play on a championship contender and make an impact, the Suns might not be a bad choice for him.

Obviously Mutombo is not an ideal choice, but next year the Suns can use their MLE on a young guy.

I totally agree with the Mutumbo idea, I just don't see any downside to it. He would come for relatively cheap, and he is still one of the best low post defenders/shot blockers in the game. Even if he doesn't play every game, in the micromanaged playoff series we would be much better with him on the bench.

Yeah, I can see good facts, and opinions to back them up in all these posts, but I do believe George O'Brien is the closest with Dikembe.. If we could pick him up for cheap..

Why not? It'd give him a great chance to be on a Championship contending team..

I have never been a huge fan of Mutumbo coming to the Suns. Except maybe years ago before he was ancient.

However, for the right price and with the right attitude I think it could be great.

We are looking for a guy to play 10-15 minutes a game. Most of the better players want more minutes and more money. So unless I'm missing something, for the money involved the best of the bunch are Hunter, Traylor, and Mutombo. For what the Suns need and what they can afford, Mutombo looks like the best bet.

Mutumbo better not get 10-15 min in the regular season. At least Hunter can run and has some potential. Mutumbo is just old and slow.

He would be nothing more than insurance for the playoffs. If we only needed him to play 10-15 minutes in a couple of playoff games he would be worth it.

Deke would be a nice pick-up but honestly don't see him leaving Houston.

That's right. HoopsHype has updated their salary tables, so I can't see how much they have for Mutombo for last season. Patricia's web site is showing he made the mid-level exception of approximately $4.5 million. It wouldn't surprise me if the money is more important to him than some of these other older (Mutombo was actually ancient... he is really 79 years old) players because he uses it for projects in the Congo.

Last stop for Mutombo
By FRAN BLINEBURY
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA - Globe-trotting Dikembe Mutombo wants to make Houston his final NBA stop.

"Oh yes, for sure," he said Friday during a break in the Basketball Without Borders outreach program. "When I went home to Atlanta for the summer, I only took three suits out of my closet. That means that all of my clothes are in Houston, and I really want to go back there."

The 39-year-old center joined the Rockets last season to be a practice partner and mentor to Yao Ming. Mutombo played more than 15 minutes a night in 80 games, averaging four points and 3.5 rebounds and was everything the Rockets had wanted, also averaging 1.26 blocked shots.

Mutombo is a seven-time NBA All-Star and four-time Defensive Player of the Year.

"I hope everything will work out quick and soon in Houston so I can put all of this behind me," the Rockets' free agent said. "I've been working out already to get myself ready to come back.

"I told a friend yesterday that I'm tired of changing uniforms. I just want to go and play where I can be accepted in Houston, where I can play the few years I have left and finish up by backing up Yao Ming or in whatever kind of role I can have. I would like to fulfill my dream and finish up the game and be happy to walk away.

"Last season was a great experience. I think Yao learned a lot from me, and I learned a lot from him and we were able to grow. If there would be a chance for us to win a championship together, it would be fabulous."
