NBA.COM lists Amare at 6'10" 245 pounds (which is quote by ESPN and Hoopshype)
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/amare_stoudemire/index.html

But the FIBA player listing has him at 6'10 225 pounds

http://www.2007lasvegas.fibaamerica.../48644/roundid/5731/fe_teamPlay_playStat.html

If they weighed him, that is likely a more up to date listing than the nba.com which is often woefully out of date.

I don't know that it makes any difference, but this might be intentional to reduce the weight his surgically repaird kness have to carry. It doesn't make much difference, I find it interesting.

Microfracture has much less effectiveness on large folk, so it was probably recommended he slim down considerably to help recovery

he's still a beast

hmm I think it might be a misprint.

Amare entered the league at the age of 19 and 245 pounds. I never remember the kid being anything close to thick. It's common knowledge that muscle weighs more than fat, and Amare has certainly bulked up his frame a bit since High School.

20lbs seems like a lot of weight for a 25 year old to drop, considering he really didn't have much body fat to begin with. You would also think that if it was doctor recommended, he would have dropped the weight last summer or during his rehabilitation.

I remember thinking that he looked skinny at the beginning on last season.

I cant find the picture again but in one of the group photos Chandler, Howard and Amare were standing next to each other on the same level and Amare was every bit as tall as Howard maybe even a shade taller, Chandler had about 2 inches on both of them however.

I watched an interview with Amare this summer - he said he's still 245, but he's "a chiseled 245".

I'm guessing he's still 240-245. This might sound strange, but part of the reason I think he looked thinner last year was that he was wearing #1 instead of #32. #32 made him look a little wider whereas #1 makes him look thinner but taller. It's sorta like wearing a vertical striped shirt instead of a horizontal striped shirt. Just a crazy theory of mine. :p

I wouldn't be surprised if he lost a few pounds, especially at the beginning of last year, but I can't believe he's anywhere near 225.

I thought so too. Actually the difference seemed dramatic to me. To be honest he looks a little wiry out there now, if you look from about the sternum down. It doesn't look like he's getting pushed around by anyone, though.

I saw Amare pretty up close at the Panamericana soccer tournament in July. I was shocked at how lithe, even wispy, he seemed. I wrote it off then to the contrast between him and stocky soccer players. I have little doubt he's healthy, but now, listening to others confirm my impression, it seems that the lack of bulk is real and perhaps deliberate.

He seems to be doing fine. I noticed that Dalembert went only 2 of 7 with just 2 rebounds in his game against USA, so it would seem Amare was not pushed around too much although he had just 3 rebounds in 18 minutes that game. It was one of Amare's weaker offensive games (just 3 of 7 but he did go 6 of 6 that game).

i think he's about 230. if he was in that 250+ range, he wouldnt be as quick and thus would be less effective. amare's main strength (physically) is that for his speed he is incredibly powerful. it's not very common to find someone with that type of body

Tonight against URUGUAY, Amare had the ball at the arc, did an up fake and then drove the basket for a bucket and one. It was so quick the defense barely reacted.

yeah i remember that play. i think it's youjustgotsunsd that has a little clip in his signature that also shows off amare's speed. the funny thing about the play in tonights game is that there could have been someone under the basket and he could finish around them, through them, and over the top of them because he is so powerful

Yes, I remember that play. Amare took his defender off the dribble, took two steps towards the basket and finished even while surrounded by three Uruguayan players. Maybe he is fast but he just doesn't look fast to me on TV. However, it does look like he has a lot of momentum behind his moves... like anything but directly opposing force would simply be brushed aside.

while he's* in the air

Amare is mid jump when you see the other defenders finally move in on him, i think its elson and ginoboli but dont know for sure. Also, duncan doesnt even really move his feet in time, he just pivots and swats at him.

I was just indicating his quickness in his first step and how he can get to the basket

Back to last night's game, some of it is still about surprise, although why they don't seem to expect LeBron to go to the basket is a bit odd. But when a guy is supposed to be a center and is quicker than the defenses guards, it does cause problems.

Hard to get excited about amare's quickness from a clip.... 3 YEARS AGO,

My jury is still out...Stat wasn't the same last yr...and its too hard to tell with this marginal tourney ball if he is getting close to where he was.

As far as I can tell, he's very close to his two years ago quickness and strength. The jury is out on just how high he can jump and if he has the same physical power/explosiveness. In his early years, explosivenes was about all of what he brought to table. Now, he has more skills, so it is not clear to me if he's not as physical or just does not rely on it as much.

You know what the best part of that clip is? After Stoudemire finishes, you can see Jake Voskuhl start heading back to the other end. In other words, Stoudemire was at PF, not center.

Imagine that.

I'm embarassed to say this, but I would love to see Jake Voskuhl back on this team.

He was a great complimentary role player, he was physical, wouldn't back down, and was a very team oriented guy.

And he would lose you two posessions every game, no matter how many minutes he played, on moving screens.

Voskuhl turned out to be a very polarizing player on this board. Some of us appreciated his scrappiness and fairly good fundamentals for defense and rebounding, the result of real college training, which most of the Suns lack. Others decried his weak offensive game and "short arms," which are allegedly what prevent him from being a real force on either end of the floor.

Edit: Oh, right, and the moving screens. How could I forget? Those were indeed annoying.

I suspect that, in order to get him, the Suns would merely have to ask. The Bucks have Bogut, Gadzuric, and now Yi. Voskuhl makes $3 million in this, the last year of his deal. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Bucks were willing to trade Voskuhl and a bit of cash for a future conditional second-round pick. (The Suns would accommodate Voskuhl's salary under the Thomas exception; it is very slightly too large to fit within the Jones exception.)
