Step #1 - Tear up his current deal completly and give him a new one.

Step #2 - Give him enough gaurenteed money to make him happy, but put in some protection for the team if an injury occures

Step #3 - Make this a LONG TERM CONTRACT, not this 3 year crap I see now. Boldin has been in the league for a whopping 2 years folks, WR's have a longer shelf life then a lot of the other positions in the league, he could easily have another 8-12 years playing, make sure we get him for another 7-8 of those years so we have his best years on this team...

Now how this all works:

Sign him to an 8 year deal, give him a $8 Million signing bonus, and give him a "1st game bonus" of $3 Million (means as long as he is healthy for the 1st game of the season he makes an immediate extra $3 million this season, this gives him $11 million right up front), Make all 8 years $3 million a year and guarentee the 1st 2 years on the contract, this gives him a gaurenteed money of $17 million dollars which should more then make him happy. His cap hits would be as follows:

1st year - $7 million ($1 million pro-rated bonus, $3 million 1st game bonus, $3 million salary) (and yes I know this is a big hit this year, but it does 2 things, #1 Boldin is happy, #2 we can afford the hit right now, lets take it while we can, #3 the rest of the contract is cap friendly)
2nd-8th year - $4 million per year
If you cut him due to health issues here would be your cap hits based on pro-rated signing bonus (assume you will spread the cap his over 2 years by cutting him after June 1st)

2nd/3rd - $6.5 Million/$3.5 million (2nd year kinda hard hit because of the guarenteed salary, save $500K on 3rd year because not paying his salary amount)
3rd/4th - $3 Million/$3 Million
4th/5th - $2.5 Million/$2.5 Million
If you cut him 5th year or later might wanna just take the $4 Million or less up front hit since it would equal his cap hit or less anyways.

This seems like the best of all worlds in my opinion.

You can't sign players to 8 year deals.... 7 years maximum and even that may have changed with the pending labor contract to expire in a few years

1. It's spelled Boldin - without the g :)
2. A signing bonus can only be pro-rated over 5 years
3. Like the idea, but don't see the big difference between your idea and the deal that the team is already offering..

Because the one the team currently is offering only guarentees Boldin $5 Million plus his current salary so about $6 million gaurenteed. I understand the concept behind it but when you see alot of free agents out thier with less talent then yours signing between $10-$15 million in gaurenteed money its hard to suck up just $6 mil.

If he's rejecting 15 million in in bonuses pver 3 years, what makes us think he'll take 8 million over 7 years? Remember, we are under NO obligation to give him ANY of this. That's the nature of the beast. 3 years is a a great deal because after 3 years he's due for another payday.

Once again because he is not rejecting $15 million over 3 years, he is rejecting $5 million this year. The other 2 bonus's are not GUARENTEED! Thats what you have to look at, he only makes the other $10 million if he plays those other 2 years and as a player you have to remember a freak accident could cost him the $10 million, my deal guarentees him $17 Million not just $5 million

Ok didnt know you couldnt do 8, I assume 7 is still viable tho because a coupe of players this past week signed 7 year deals, Mckenzie, Samuels & Jennings all got 7 years

Compared to not being garaunteed even the 5 mil over the next 3. Look, the guy doesn't HAVE to be renegotiated. I think it is fair to take an exclusive rights free agent with a history of knee injuries and offer him a 5 million bonus each of the next 3 years. Quick, name another 2nd year player who got an offer like this. Anyone? It is VERY fair.

If you're going to use the term so extensively, you might want to learn how to spell it: guaranteed. :D

I thought it was earlier reported that 5 years was the max that could be done because of the CBA expiring. Maybe just the cap hit is based on 5 years.

Maybe the bonus is spread over 5 years, but the player can still sign contracts for up to 7 years? I remember hearing the same thing.....
