I'm a uncle's monkey??
Step #1 - Tear up his current deal completly and give him a new one.
Step #2 - Give him enough gaurenteed money to make him happy, but put in some protection for the team if an injury occures
Step #3 - Make this a LONG TERM CONTRACT, not this 3 year crap I see now. Boldin has been in the league for a whopping 2 years folks, WR's have a longer shelf life then a lot of the other positions in the league, he could easily have another 8-12 years playing, make sure we get him for another 7-8 of those years so we have his best years on this team...
Now how this all works:
Sign him to an 8 year deal, give him a $8 Million signing bonus, and give him a "1st game bonus" of $3 Million (means as long as he is healthy for the 1st game of the season he makes an immediate extra $3 million this season, this gives him $11 million right up front), Make all 8 years $3 million a year and guarentee the 1st 2 years on the contract, this gives him a gaurenteed money of $17 million dollars which should more then make him happy. His cap hits would be as follows:
1st year - $7 million ($1 million pro-rated bonus, $3 million 1st game bonus, $3 million salary) (and yes I know this is a big hit this year, but it does 2 things, #1 Boldin is happy, #2 we can afford the hit right now, lets take it while we can, #3 the rest of the contract is cap friendly)
2nd-8th year - $4 million per year
If you cut him due to health issues here would be your cap hits based on pro-rated signing bonus (assume you will spread the cap his over 2 years by cutting him after June 1st)
2nd/3rd - $6.5 Million/$3.5 million (2nd year kinda hard hit because of the guarenteed salary, save $500K on 3rd year because not paying his salary amount)
3rd/4th - $3 Million/$3 Million
4th/5th - $2.5 Million/$2.5 Million
If you cut him 5th year or later might wanna just take the $4 Million or less up front hit since it would equal his cap hit or less anyways.
This seems like the best of all worlds in my opinion.
