The kid impressed me last year filling in for an injured Dalton & I was high on him coming out of Bama. Better arm than most think & throws a pretty good deep ball. If I were the Cards I would give them a call. I'd give up a 3rd & possibly another late pick & possibly just a 2nd. Like Glennon as well, but like AJ better.

It's time! Thoughts?

I'd pass. After this draft, the QB classes are supposed to be pretty good. I'll go with Palmer next year and then draft a guy who can learn within the current system. However, I would take a strong look at Deshaun Watson in round 2 this year though, if he's there. Otherwise, I'm waiting.

Plus, I think next year may be BA's last because of health. That's the time to bring in a new QB along with a new staff as there will be likely be a new system in place because I don't think there are many, if any, in house options to succeed BA as head coach.

He looked very good last year when Dalton got hurt. I can see some teams going after him this year, just don't know if Cards would be one. Unfortunately, BA likes Stanton as his backup and Palmer will be the starter next year. IMO Cards won't trade this offseason for a qb but could draft one to develop. Kizer from Notre Dame and Watson from Clemson are possibilities. Will have a better feel on QBs after the Combine

How long do you want to put this off? AFTER this coming draft? I'd like us to get someone post-haste, because I don't have much faith in Palmer next year. It's not his fault; he's just old. We really, really don't need to be putting off the QBOTF search. We've put it off so long it's already likely to hurt us.

All credit to you, though, that there is one guy you'd consider this year.

Why do you want take a QB just to take one? Palmer, barring injury in the last few games, is almost a sure bet to be behind the center next year. Arians has said QB's get better by playing. I agree. I don't think taking a guy like Trubisky, who has basically played 1 full year, and sitting him a year is any better than taking a guy in round 1 of 2018 who has been playing.

I like Watson because he's started 36 games and has played at a high level(67% comp, 86 TD's/30 ints) while leading his team to playoffs the last 2 years, and that's why he's about the only guy I like this year.

How about Mike Glennon who is a FA that you don't have to trade for? I like AJ but what do you give up for him?

I think Deshaun Watson is another RGIII waiting to happen.
Watson has much better pocket awareness than RGIII, and he actually looks past his 1st read. I'd compare him more to Tyrod Taylor than RGIII.

What role do you want McCarron to fill - Carson's replacement? Stanton's?

A roster-filler as our #3?

Our biggest need at the position right now is our QBOF (Job description: At least as potentially as good as Palmer is right now or why bother). I'm far from being sold that McCarron is that guy.

Or McCarron could be Drew's backup/ a system guy who'd keep the seat warm. If he were to be our #3/PS guy, it would be nice but nowhere near the complete answer.

Of course we all realize how a 6-rounder turned out in NE, so who knows?

Fair play to you, Cbus. I mean, I disagree, but your point's as valid as mine. I'm not hell bent on taking a QB just to take one, but I think we certainly shouldn't rule out taking one just because the next year's draft is supposed to be better.

According to everything I read about Watson and seeing him play is he plays in a very simple offense and he hardly ever comes off his first read or primary target. Yes he has a strong arm and can move in the pocket or more accurately out of the pocket and be a running threat, but as a NFL QB he has a long, long way to go.

That's easy. You release Stanton once the trade happens & make AJ #2. He's light years better than Drew!!! If Palmer starts to struggle you make the move & the rest is history

Agreed. I am warming up to this idea as well. I am all for taking a later round risk on Kelly but everyone else is too risky/too early for me.

AJ is a pretty good solution right now. He only gets paid 700k this year and is a RFA next year. That lines up very well with Palmer's salary.

He has NFL starting experience in a solid offense and has moxie (led his team back in the playoffs vs Steelers).

He would replace Stanton and get a year to learn offense and be a real option if Carson got hurt. Stanton sucks.

He could then be the starter in his RFA year and we could sign him to LT contract or franchise him (like Kurt Cousins).

I don't think McCarron is the next Tom Brady but I do think he can be a top 20 QB with this offense and David Johnson.

I am fine giving up a #3 (2 year bridge) or even a #2 pick if the Cardinals feel he is the guy.
