How can some media predict us at 5-11?

the media isn't there to give honest opinions - they are there to create debate, yell a lot and get people talking

i think berman is a windbag, regardless of who he picks - it's all schtick

about every local sports radio show I listened to broke down the NFC West like this - guy 1 (usually the one with local roots or a tie to the cards) picks the cards to win the division and seahawks out of the playoffs ....... his counterpart (often the transplant) picks seattle to win the division and the cards to have an outside chance at the WC - it's like clockwork

what you guys are seeing now is what seattle went through when they were constantly a 7-8 team win and couldn't get over the hump ........ after a couple years of being the trendy darkhorse pick, there is a backlash and it was the same ol' seahawks

some dude on the radio yesterday said the bills will have a top 5 defense this year and seattle would lose by 20+ on sunday, because they were not able to stop ryan grant, on natural grass, in a snowstorm with defenders sliding all over the place ......... made no mention that seattle actually had a better defense than buffalo last year and seattle has brought all 11 starters back

nothing to get mad at though - because none of it matters

what matters is sound player moves, consistent execution, playing smart without penalties, making the most of your opportunities

for the most part games in the league are always very close, they always come down to a couple coulda/woulda/shoulda moments

the only thing that matters is if you win the games - there is not shoulda lost or coulda won in this league

will be interesting to see how the season shakes out - it could go anyway

however, if seattle falters it will not be because of age

they are not an old team ......... no matter how much someone repeats it, there is just no truth there

Cardinal-bashing...

has ALWAYS been a popular sport. In part, it's about "contrast". Everyone wants to be right and they love to compare BEST with WORST! ...And The Bidwill's have been less than successful in their attempts to put a winner on the field for many years. That being said, this is a "new" era. NEW stadium, NEW owner commitment, NEW (SUCCESSFUL) Drafting team, NEW (QUALITY)coaching staff. I see improvement in ALL these areas. IF we continue to "add" good-things to the mix we WILL succeed!! It's NOT a question of IF/ It's a question of WHEN. ...And the phrase, "He who laughs last, LAUGHS BEST", will be true. WE KNOW we're thisclose to being GOOD. THE NFL, media, fans, etc. just don't know it...YET! BUT they will. VERY SOON! :) GO CARDS!!

The thing is: virutally every team is more than capable of going 5-11. The difference between winning and losing in the NFL is so slight...it comes down to :

(1) coaching, especially in tight games;

(2) keeping healthy (if Tom Brady gets hurt, the Patriots could go 5-11...their backup QBs are bad and won't win them the close games);

(3) avoiding teams being hot when you play them (which is why it is totally pointless to look down a schedule and predict wins and losses--all teams are capable of being hot when you play them);

(4) getting off to slow starts and having to play catch-up (which causes teams to press too hard at times and often leads a team to become demoralized when they put in the effort and still don't win);

(5) field goal success, especially with games on the line.

Note: losing in football has a tougher impact on a team than any other sport...because winning allows the banged up (and let's face it, most NFL players have real painful Mondays) to feel it's all worth it, whereas losing causes the banged up to question whether the physical and emotional toll is too much.

This pundit may be paying attention to history...the Cards always seem to drop off to 4-12 or 5-11 after a rare non-losing season.

That's why this is such an important year for Whiz and his staff. If they build on last year's win total and make the playoffs...the Cardinals may be good for years to come.

Dead on Mitch - I agree wholeheartedly!!

I don't think people should be focused on what the media is saying. It's easy to say that a team like N.E. or Dallas will win games. It's also easy to bash Detroit or AZ. but no one really knows what will happen year to year. I think the cards under-achieved last year....couldn't get consistent play from the QB/defense. but they showed a lot of potential when those two entities played well. the problem is they have a much more difficult schedule this season. If the cards prove people wrong you guys get the last laugh and it will be well deserved. other than that don't put too much stock into who's pickin who cuz no one really knows what will happen.

Stronso. I can only shake my head at that prediction. You think SF is sweeping us??!! And we can't beat NYJ, or Carolina?? That's just going a bit far man IMO.

SF has swept us twice in the past 3 years? Carolina and the Jets could both be playoff teams and both were 2 years ago if memory serves me. I can see his argument. Don't agree at all but it's not like we have proven good enough to have free pass games.

The 49ers are a particularly tough matchup for us.

They just have our number in some ways.

A. They still think they're above us, or they refuse to sink below us, the human mind is very powerfull that way.

B. For whatever reason they just matchup well with us.

C. It's on the road and we just suck at that and still do.

It's very nerve racking to have to start there again, it's BS is what it is, I'd rather have the Rams as the first home game but here we are again.

Even if we lose it's just a road loss and it's just one game, I plan to enjoy it even if we do lose and we very well could. I don't expect that this year but I'm more than aware that it could happen and still not mean the same old Cardinals.

SF always gives the Cards problems.......

Carolina is a better team than us

Dont look down on the Jets - they were a playoff team 2 years ago but injuries decimated them last year. They also spent big bucks to bring in necessary parts then Brett Favre fell in their lap

I think I am spot - on

Plus the Cards have a HISTORY of tanking in the second year of a coaching tenure

Yup. No matter what we have done through history or how good we look on paper we ALWAYS disappoint.

Hopefully no longer but who really knows.

Bingo.

One thing, and only one thing, will change the media's perception of us as a 5-11 team: winning. The team has one playoff win since the Harry Truman administration. Do you think the media's going to give us credit for being a great team based on some happy preseason/offseason predictions? No f'n way.

They've heard all the "great team on paper" stuff and the lame rah-rah speeches from the coaches and front office about how we've turned things around. They've heard it all a dozen times before - Buddy Ryan, Joe Bugel, McGinnis, Bob Ferguson, Graves, Mike Bidwill, all of them.....and it has never panned out.

Until it pans out and we back up the talk with victories, we get no credit for anything. Face it.

If they beat NYG and NE I will be very impressed.

SEA is such a wild card since Hasselbeck is coming back.

You know what the sad thing is?? After this season is done, we still won't get any respect. All of the reporters are going to chalk up our playoff apperance as a default win because of the ineptitude of the other three teams in our deivision. I can hear it now; "Seattle will make a triumfant comback to win back the West." or, "the 49ers will surprise the world after Singletary gets his guys in there and take over." Guarantee there will not be one person out there who will predict us as repeat champs.

I worry that we will be unanimous favorites going into next year. That would not be a good sign.

Fine. Screw the media - who cares what they say.

When we win this division, and win it next year, and the year after that - I still won't care the media says.

Because it doesn't matter worth a damn IMO - the Cards are my team, I stand behind them in the good times and bad, and I don't need any validation by the media or anyone else for that matter.

Go Cards!

Winning tends to bread more winning in the NFL. Just look at the Giants. No one expected them to be better this year, especially since they lost both their starting DEs before the season started.

Our division is ripe for the taking as SF will be starting a new QB and all 3 teams will have a new head coach. Our success next season will depend primarily on resigning our key players, drafting well, and staying healthy. I doubt we will have the cap room to bring in any big names unless we let people walk.

Sometimes it's better to be the guys who everyone disses and underestimates. Just lay low and play hard and realise that an ugly win is still a win. I think the Cards are becoming that kind of a team. Having confidence in themselves and their team-mates even when the talking heads don't.

Let's be the fans that support the team that guts it out no matter what anyone says.

I totally disagree with this. Ken Whisenhunt is the kind of coach the media love. The Cards now have marquee players instead of a bunch of no name cast offs. They play in a beautiful stadium instead of a tanning booth. Everything about the Cards is setting them up to be media darlings. Instead of the armpit of the NFL the Cards will be the team every reporter wants to cover.

Its about time.

I am here to eat crow for my erroneous prediction of 5-11. The Cards have done better than I couldve hoped for.

If y'all want to throw crap at me go right ahead - I can take it
