"Along those same lines, Skelton admitted he called the wrong play in the huddle on his first drive. For an offense fighting to execute as it is, mental errors are killers."

The play is relayed into Skelton literally seconds before he relays it in the huddle? How in the world do you call it wrong?

The phenomena we know as the "Kolb Jitters" is a direct result of this confusion...

Kolb??

His jitters cause Skelton to call the wrong play?

Skelton's accuracy improved and he made progress with the first team. Run fundementals went backwards, Some was young backs, Really I didn't see as much Bad levi as everybody else is saying? Maybe they are talking out of habit, He did hold on the INT- but I've seen alot worse holding not called. If He would have let them get Skelton it would have avoided yhe INT( Kidding)

Kolb has a shot at home against the Raiders, He deserves it - He didn't do well but did improve-and stay upright. playcallers played safer, more protections, I think Kolb will improve this week but Skelton is ahead unless Kolb puts up a 100+ QB rating.

Beanie or RWill may give the entire team a boost- but I don't trust the stupid Raiders- I hope they puke up red kool aid.

Depends on complexity of terminology. Ever hear Peyton Manning go thru his "heavy12...double pony...Right...Over Two... two...Scat... Michigan...Sidewinder..Kitty Litter...On three..." type play call? I get a headache just listening to it let alone repeating it from memory - immediate or not.

It shouldn't depend on anything. If you want to be a starting QB you should know the entire playbook. You certainly should be able to relay it back to your team literally seconds after you received it in your headset helmet?

He been with the team for 3 seasons. the playbook should almost be 2nd nature by now.

What does any of that have to to with the topic of the thread?

I'm not saying it's excusable, I'm just answering the question:

While any of us would hear the play called and try to memorize the words, professional quarterbacks hear the words and picture the play in their heads as the words are told to them. The blocking, the 3-5 routes, the direction of the play, etc... So, when Skelton calls the wrong play, it's likely because he's thinking of a play that is similar in design. He's doing more than just repeating the words he heard 10 seconds prior.

That is why it's the most difficult position to play in all of sports and that's why intelligence is as as important as arm strength and height. You expect this from a rookie, not a third year vet

Please keep bagging on Double Deuce. It's an NFC West title and pro bowl for Skelton if you do. Stupid Cubs fans. 67 years without an NL pennant. 105 years without a World Series title. Meanwhile the Cards have two WS titles in just the last 6 years. How much would it cost for you to become a 49ers fan?

Does Skelton wear the plays on his forearm?

If so, he just recieved a number, and relayed the wrong play call. To be honest though, if he called out a play, it is also his job to immediately realize if he has the right players on the field for the play...i.e. two tight ends, or 4 wide, etc.

If he doesn't wear the plays on his arm, it's inexcusable.

its inexcusable whether he wears them on his arm or not. He is in his third year in this offense. Even if he didnt play much(which he has) He should know that play book backward and forwards. No questions asked.

Did they mention which play it was?

If not, I would guess it was the running play where the blockers went right and Smith went left. Probably got his "left, right, center" terms screwed up.

Much ado about nothing if you ask me. Skelton took credit for the miscue either way, no matter who's fault it was. That's what a pro QB does. I've never heard, even bad QB's, ever say the RB ran the wrong play or the Oline ran the wrong protection. Just like Skelton never mentions the WR's running wrong routes, even though Whis points it out occasionally. QB's always take credit for any miscues. That's what they do. Way to man up I say.

Well, at least he just called the wrong play and didn't execute a different play than the rest of the offense. That would have been more of a red flag in terms of knowing the playbook, IMO. Besides, some have been so frustrated with Whiz' playcalling at times that maybe they'd prefer things work this way. ;)

I'm of the opinion that this exact thing happens way more often, with all teams, than what most people would expect. You simply don't hear about it...

I'm sure it does. With rookies and guys who have switched teams and systems. I'm willing to bet it doesn't happen all that often to a guy whose been in the same offensive system for his 3rd season. JMO.
