Ideally you want a RB who is great at everything, like Adrian Peterson(who, if you haven't heard, we could've had :D ) but those guys don't come around all that often. Thsi year there are question marks on every RB in the draft. Would you rather have a guy who is superior in some areas or a guy like Donald Brown, who isn't great at any one apsect of a RB but probably rates in the top 5 of all categories of a RB. In other words a jack of all trades, master of none.

Wells: clearly he's the best power/speed/ size combo in the draft but has durability issues.Could be Eddie George or could be Ron Dayne.

Moreno: he's the most elusive and had great vision but lacks the top end speed that the great one's have. Could be Portis or could be Leland McElroy.

then you have Brown: he doesn't have any glaring weaknesses but also isn't "great" at anything. Probably not going to be a superstar but also probably not going to be a bust.

If you had your choice would draft the potential superstar, Wells/Moreno, or go with the "safe" pick in Brown? Me, in round 1, i'm going after the potential superstar.

I want consistency in the running game. I want a back who is going to get you those 3-5 tough runs most of the time. I want a back that when the hole starts to close can run over a guy for 2-3 more yards. One of those backs that defenses just hate to tackle in the fourth quarter. To me that guy is Shonn Greene.

I also would love to have a speed back to give you those big plays, but IMO that is more of a luxury than a need.

A good one. Period. I don't care about his style. No dancers and no softies.

I shouldn't talk, but the title of this thread threw me off. Who is the what now?

I think you are asking what kind of RB do you prefer.

Either an "every down back" or a role playing back.

I have said it before, that I know Whiz prefers a two back system, because his mentors Bill Cowher, and Joe Gibbs prefered a two back system.

Steelers: Jerome Bettis & Willie Parker

Redskins: John Riggins & Joe Washington

i'd like a guy with speed and the ability to catch. i know with this offense you would want a good blocking RB...but i'd rather a RB who can be a threat to catch as well.

in general? or for the current Cardinals roster?

for the current Cards: they have the between the tackles pounder in Hightower. I would want a back that can give them a little of the game breaking potential.

I have come to the conclusion that Wells and Moreno will not only be gone, but long gone by #31 ---

the two likely to be there -- Brown and McCoy both fit the less power, but more dynamic in the open field kind of back.

Initially --- I wasnt crazy about using #31 on either of them. After watching enough youtube video on both ( I know, hardly the perfect medium for scouting) -- #31 feels a little high for those players, but it wouldnt be huge reach either.

I say draft one of the RB's at #31, then draft defense the rest of the weekend!

We need a ground presence between the tackles.

Wells might give it to us (if available). Maybe Shonn Greene or Andre Brown as well. But none are surefire.

Frankly, I think our most dependable short term option would be to sign (use and & keep happy) Edgerrin James.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't snap up a Wells or Moreno (who weighs anywhere from 210 to 217 depending on who you believe). We're going to need a plow-horse sooner or later.

But - if I could afford him - I'd keep Edge around - at the very least for depth and leadership; or (assuming the coaching staff learned its lesson toward the end of last year) to be a very important cog in our run game).

Moreno is the best all around back. He plays faster than his timed speed. He can catch and block. He's big enough to go between the tackles.

Moreno reminds me of Hightower, Wells looks like Jamaal Lewis and Brown makes me think Joe Addai.

What scares me is that watching game film doesn't tell you too much about Moreno becuase he runs through holes the size of my living room and is never touched for the first 6-8 yards. I wonder what he'll do about consistantly seeing guys behind the LOS coming for him. In college he was fast enough to turn the corner on them but I dont think he can in the pros. Wells doesn't look soft when he plays, but everyone's heard the rumors about him being a cupcake. Brown played against lesser talent (as did Jennings) so that is always somewhat of a crapshoot.

How so?

isn't Moreno way more athletic than Hightower?
Moreno has a bit more wiggle no doubt, but when I watch him in the open field he just looks like Bubba Dunbar to me. They have very similar size and body types and just look very similar knifing through the lines IMO. Probably just me.

I was never as high on Hightower as most of the board, but after re-watching game tape from lats year I really think he can get the job done. The kid has a nose for the first down marker and the enzone and that cannot be overvalued.

If I were in charge I would keep Edge and roll with what we've got for another year. The thought of having a rook, two new guys to the system (Wright and Kriedel) and a D2 guy in his second year as your pass protectors scares the hell out of me. I cant imagine it gets Kurt overly excited either.

Do you have any punters you think the Cards should take in the 4th this year?

The worst part is that he was drafted by Washington so I had to watch him stink it up. He was doing good, but got hit one time and then rushed every punt after. The kid was a wuss, how was I supposed to know without a proper interview prior to my mock?:mulli:

I want the next Jim Brown, OJ Simpson, Eric Dickerson, Walter Payton or Earl Campbell. No players close to those in upside this year?

Okay. Give me the next Leroy Kelly, Terrelle Davis or LaDanian Tomlinson. Still a no-go?

Damn. How about a budding Terry Metcalf, Curtis Martin, Ricky Bell, Marcus Allen or even Priest Holmes?

Not making fun of the thread. To the contrary. Some RB or RBs in this year's draft is going to be good, very good or even great. I don't know who that is or those somebodies are from this year's crop.

Last year I was sure Stewart would be good. A few years back, Shawn Alexander was clearly the best RB of that crop. I died a thousand deaths when Vince Tobin chose Thomas Jones.

So, cbus, good question but I've got squat for an answer. If every RB was still available at #31, I wouldn't know who to pick or whether to wait for a later round to grab a RB. It is one of those years for me. Sad because we must get a contributor immediately.

I like a bunch of 2009 RBs a little. No one guy grabs me as a guaranteed good runner.

I just want a running back that gets 4-5 yards a pop and can bust one for 20+ yards more frequently than we have seen in the past. I couldn't care less how he gets his yards as long as he gets them. Wether he runs people over or makes people miss doesn't matter to me as long as he consistently is getting 4-5 yards a pop.

But I would rather have 5 runs of 5 yards each totaling 25 yards than a back who gets 4 runs of one yard and then busts 1 for 25 yards equaling 29 yards. We just need someone who can consistently pick up good yardage regardless of style.

That's my take on it as well. With our offense facing 2 and 6 or 3 and 3 opposing Ds will have to be honest and keep that extra guy in the box. Warner will rip teams apart if that is the scenario. It's also a great heath benefit to Warner not to face a lot of 3rd and longs.
I would take Wells or Moreno in the first and Shonn Greene intrigues me because he rarely goes down on first contact and doesn't fumble.

No way Skorp, Jamaal Lewis was the best of that bunch by a mile.

Personally I like Wells the most.

Sorry, Justin. I meant Alexander was the best available to us. Lewis was drafted before our pick came up, if I recall correctly. I admit, I was leery of him too and might still have drafted Alexander if Lewis had been there.

Yeah, I am in agreement with you. When the Ravens took Lewis I was excited because I was sure the Cards would get him and he would blow both knees out immediately upon arriving in Arizona. I liked Jones though. IIRC Seattle played it smart because they had Ricky Watters still so Alexander was able to sit and learn for a while. I dont remember too much from that period as I was pretty young.

BINGO! We have a winner!!! Defense ...Defense....and more Defense. There is absolutely nothing that drastically wrong with the offense the way it is. Why take a running back who isn't the entire package? The combo of Edge and Hightower is adequate if nothing else. I'd take McCoy if he slipped to our 2nd or third pick.
Otherwise OLB/DE or DE/OLB is the way to go.
