POST-DRAFT ANALYSIS:
(No. 31 overall, Cardinals) Wells is a home-run pick for the Cardinals, who were so excited that the running back fell to them that they called him before Tennessee made the previous pick. Wells has a rare combination of power and explosiveness but needs to prove he can be durable. His arrival in Arizona, in our opinion, makes the Cardinals a threat to return to the Super Bowl in 2009.

Better question: How excited is Arizona's Finest before the pick?

Answer: Alot

I am glad they mentioned us as SB contenders in this article. I see us having a similar trending to the Giants going into last year. They won the Super Bowl but there were numerous other NFC teams (even in their own division) that were seen as better teams and given more preseason love.

I think that will put a chip on our shoulders for the regular season and I am hoping that translates into a 13-2 or 12-4 type record.

Its not assumed we wil have the same post season success as last year but I am hopeful this regular season will be a magic ride for us all.

Even without Laboy and Hood ;)

i love watching his highlights..i love to see him literally throw defenders to the ground with his stiff arms..the guys in the NFL are a lot bigger than they are in college, but i still think he'll turn into a good RB

Had Plaxico (sp?) not been such a doofus and was healthy and played the whole season/play-offs, they may have been in the Superbowl instead of us. This year we won't have those issues (hope) and should be (though we aren't) NFC favorites. The rest will catch on to this fact soon enough.....

I like to read stuff like this. Pumps me up whether it is right or wrong. I can spend the rest of the summer and spring thinking we have a real running game.

In the context of the Cardinals' offense, we do. I like the fact that Wells will not be handed the ball 40 times a game for duability's sake, and I love the fact that he'll get to learn the NFL game as one facet of an extremely productive offense. And he'll be taking hand-offs from a guy who's passed the ball to Faulk, Tiki, and Edge.

JohnH- KNOWING we have a real running game!! Chickenhead, do you think Wells will be a surprisingly good receiver out of the backfield? I just have a feeling that he will surprise us all with how catches the ball. all the scouting reports talk about his outstanding athleticism, and I believe he can do it!!

Guess this disproves the theory some had that they were mulling over the pick which is why it took them until the last minute.

I thought Whiz said they had the pick written down before the Titans picked but they had gotten some calls about trading and it wouldn't have been smart to not at least listen. If an offer was good enough to be better than Beanie they would have taken it but if not, Beanie was the sure pick.

I hear they are so excited that Wells is now the nickle CB and OLB.

Makes for a terrific story to go down in the legends of Cardinal football, but I think the conclusion behind the story may be overplayed.

We all saw Beanie on the phone break into a great, big smile just before Tennessee picked (and many wrongly assumed he was talking with the Titan people).

But I'm not so sure the reason why the Cardinals called before they were actually on the clock was "because they were so excited, they couldn't wait". From what what I heard from Cardinal pressers and conference calls with the rookies, it was SOP for a Cardinal representative to call a prospective pick a bit early to make certain he'd be around when the trigger was actually pulled.

Bottom line: I'm sure everyone was excited, but contacting Beanie early was more a reflection of the way the Cardinals do business.

I wasn't saying it proves they were any more excited than normal, but if they didn't really want him like some said at the time, they likely wouldn't have called him until the last minute when they knew they were going to take him, rather what appeared to happen was they knew they would take him unless they got a great offer, so they called him to let him know they planned on taking him but were listening to offers at the same time.

Jeff, I have never seen that happen on a first round pick before. But having cam shots of the picks on the screen when the call is made is actually just within the last several years. Technology is becoming more sophisticated every year.

They were definitely ecstatic. I'm sure a lot of you heard the story about Whiz asking Wells (when he was leaving his visit with us) if they wanted to call him "Chris" or "Beanie" after they drafted him.

I'm not worried about his catching abilities at all. If you've been an elite football player your entire life, I don't believe you have an excuse to not be able to catch short dump passes in the backfield.

Guy caught really well in practices/combine before the draft and catching out of the backfield was not really utilized at Ohio St., in other words, Wells can catch :)

Thankyou Jetstream! Beanie keeps looking better in my eyes as our pick. I'm glad we took him over Moreno and Brown[as if we had a choice].. I can't wait till he knocks Dansby's helmet off 2-3x in practice, and I hope to be there in Flag when it happens..

I think he can catch the ball fine as well but it probably isn't that big a deal because TH and Wright will be the guys catching balls out of the backfield this year.

Great opportunity for Wells, great opportunity for the Cards. With a little improvement on the offensive lines blocking, Wells and Hightower could be a formidable pair.
