I'm not asking this to be a smart ass. I'm genuinely interested. Just going from memory:

1980,83 Raiders-Plunkett was originally drafted by New England then went to SF before ending up in Oakland and led them to 2 SB wins.

1987 Redskins-Doug Williams started in Tampa Bay before defecting to the USFL and returned to the NFL as a backup to Jay Shroedor.

1996 Packers-Brett Favre started his career in Atlanta.

1999 Rams-Kurt Warner was an undrafted free agent in Packers camp before he bounced around a couple of sub leagues before ending up the starter in St. Louis.

2009 Saints-Drew Brees started with the Chargers before basically being run out after they drafted Eli Manning and traded him for Philip Rivers.

I don't think I forgot anyone. The point here is that it's rare a FA or traded for QB has won a Super Bowl. I'm stressing the importance of grooming a young QB.

Given that it's a team sport, I'd say that none of them would have won if they didn't have the defenses they had.

3 years in a row a 10-6 or 9-7 team has won the SB, 5 of the last 6 a team with 10 or fewer wins has been in the SB. So does it really matter?

The only important thing is to get to the postseason and hope your QB gets hot for 3-4 games.

So, so true in today's game.

Let's all remember that Kurt Warner almost added 2 more rings to this list.

SB IV - Len Dawson (drafted by the Steelers) won it for the Chiefs

SB V - Earl Morrell (drafted by the 49ers) replaced Unitas (who was drafted by the Steelers) to win the game for the Colts

SB XV - Jim Plunkett (drafted by the Patriots) won it for the Raiders

SB XVII - Joe Theismann (drafted by the Dolphins) won it for the Redskins

SB XVIII - Jim Plunkett again

SB XXII - Doug Williams (drafted by the Bucs) won it for the Redskins

SB XXIX - Steve Young (drafted by the Bucs) won it for the 49ers

SB XXXI - Brett Favre (drafted by the Falcons) won it for the Packers

SB XXXII - John Elway (drafted by the Colts) won it for the Broncos

SB XXXIII - John Elway again

SB XXXIV - Kurt Warner (UDFA with the Packers) won it for the Rams

SB XXXV - Trent Dilfer (drafted by the Bucs) won it for the Ravens

SB XXXVII - Brad Johnson (drafted by the Vikings) won it for the Bucs

SB XLII - Eli Manning (drafted by the Chargers) won it for the NY Giants

SB XLIV - Drew Brees (drafted by the Chargers) won it for the Saints

SB XLVI - Eli Manning again

So 16 of 47. 34% of the time.

At the same time, he was only one yard away from his one ring possibly never being won. If the Titans had tied it on the final play who knows how that game would have ended...

Sure and without the BS "giving himself up" call vs the Cards, the Giants wouldn't have gone to the SB to be able to win their last one (just the most vivid in my memory. Not that it's any bigger or smaller than any other examples). I'm sure there's examples of that littered throughout the seasons of most SB champs

True. If the Eagles had not upset the Giants - allowing us to host the NFC Championship - we likely do not make it to the Super Bowl at all.

Nonsense. We'd have kicked the Giants rears all the way to Delaware.

I don't think that QBs that spent all or virtually all of their careers with one team should count towards this list, such as Favre, Eli, Elway, or Theisman (though he did play some in the CFL). On the other hand, you could make the list for traded/free agent QBs that made the super bowl, as a conference title is pretty significant.

Agree. Neither Elway, nor Eli Manning spent a single day at either the Baltimore or San Diego facilities. To me, those were "draft day" trades (though I think Elway had to wait a couple of weeks before he finally got traded to Denver.

I know that winning the Super Bowl is the final goal, but if you judge success only that way, then 31 teams every year are abject failures. If you want to expand the model to teams who won divisions or made the playoffs with QBs they didn't draft, the list looks a little more expansive.

2 of 12 playoff teams in 2012 didn't draft their QB.

I wasn't including games like that, where I consider it an indirect effect. Whereas the Giants specifically caught a break vs us, BARELY allowing them to get into the postseason. Last year you could make a similar argument to the Giants/Eagles one regarding the GB/SEA clusterfreak which gave SF the bye rather than GB, had they had that 1 more win
