The New England Patriots aren't completely out of the hunt for star free agent wide receiver Cooper Kupp, but the former Super Bowl MVP could price himself out of their range.
Anyone expecting to get the 31-year-old receiver coming off the worst statistical season of his NFL career on a cheapened deal might be disappointed.
According to The Athletic's Jeff Howe, Kupp's asking price has been as high as $15 million per year. However, he might take less to go to a preferred destination.
It's hard envisioning the Patriots being a team the veteran wideout would take a pay cut to sign with in free agency. Sure, he'd get to reunite with his former college teammate, Kendrick Bourne, but he'd also be playing in the cold with a team that has gone 4-13 in back-to-back seasons.
It would take an overpay from the Patriots to land the standout veteran receiver.
Some would rather pass on the soon-to-be 32-year-old Kupp and focus on younger talent instead.
That tactic would put the onus on the front office to knock their draft picks out of the park or facilitate an unexpected trade for another proven offensive playmaker.
The Patriots currently own the No. 4 overall pick of the 2025 NFL draft and could be in a position to select Colorado's Travis Hunter.
But Hunter alone isn't going to be enough to fix the problems with the receiving corps. Kupp isn't the player he used to be, but he's still a reliable pass-catcher and a great locker room leader.
The Patriots could have used someone like him on the team last season.

WR Cooper Kupp's asking price has been as high as $15M per year, per sources. It sounds like he'd take less for a preferred destination. But if teams are willing to hit $15M, it would widen the list of landing spots.
