Once the young D'backs are guided to not try to put every pitch into the air, I'd like to see the O-Dog batting leadoff. Sort of like when Craig Counsell was moved to leadoff, which made the rest of the team better.

A good leadoff hitter is not afraid to take pitches to let the rest of the lineup see what the pitcher has.

A good leadoff hitter knows when to poke at the ball, hit a line drive or put some power into it.

A good leadoff hitter knows when to hit one up the middle, to the opposite field or pull one.

So, with what we have, I'd like to see

Hudson 2B
Drew SS
Young CF
Jackson 1B
Tracy 3B
Upton RF
Reynolds LF
Snyder C

Oh, did I leave Byrnes out of the lineup?

'Sorry, I just can't bring myself to see him swinging the bat.

One hit since his return? Give me a break.

Edit. Oops. Misspelled Snyder.

Why do pretty much all of you have Snyder in the 8th spot. His major skill set is to hit the ball hard or walk. Second on the team in IsoP and he's hitting 8th?

1) Hudson
2) Jackson
3) Young
4) Reynolds
5) Snyder
6) Drew
7) Upton
8) Byrnes
9) Pitcher

Looking at lineups made me curious about comparing the man who used to be the face of the Diamondbacks . . . and the one who supposedly is now.

Player G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG

Byrnes 51 205 28 42 12 1 6 23 74 16 36 4 3 .269 .361 .205

Gonzo 78 222 20 60 13 1 5 29 90 29 29 1 2 .350 .405 .270

In almost the same number of at-bats, Gonzo has one more double and Byrnes has one more HR. K/BB -- Gonzo has more walks and less strikeouts.

Avg/Slug%/OBP.....Gonzo .270, .405, .350
.........................Byrnes .205, .361, .269

And most of all, Byrnes, by example, is teaching our young players to uppercut like crazy, hitting popups as high as they can.

Gonzo, by example, would be teaching them to hit liners to the gaps for extra base hits.

Not to mention, Byrnes adolescent behavior in front of a TV camera vs. Gonzo's professional approach.

I miss Gonzo. As a pinch-hitter and backup left fielder, his presence would have made the D'backs a better team. Not just his performance. But all of our underachieving young players.

I agree that Gonzo could have made a great mentor and essentially cemented his place with this organization, but Gonzo wasn't ready for that. When he left AZ he was a starter in his mind, one that was about playing on a winning team of veterans and having an everyday spot in LF.
It took a failed stint in LA and a no-bid FA offseason for reality to come to Gonzo.

Gonzo didn't like the youngsters -- that was well known. He didn't like them here, and he didn't like them in LA, and they knew it. Great quality in a mentor!
Plus if you think BoMel wouldn't have had a severe case of veteran swoon, you're awfully forgetful. NEITHER Gonzo or Byrnes should be on this team.

I hope they leave Young out of the leadoff for good. Nothing worse than a leadoff that can't get on base or get a freakin steal.
