SAN JOSE, Calif. - Pat Tillman's former high school is naming its new football stadium after its most famous alumnus.

Tillman, who was killed earlier this year in Afghanistan, became a symbol of selflessness when he gave up his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals and a $3.6 million contract to join the Army Rangers after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

On Friday, Leland High School retired Tillman's No. 42 jersey and named its new stadium after him.

Former San Francisco 49ers safety Ronnie Lott joined a group of Tillman's teammates from Leland's 1993 Central Coast Section championship team to remember their friend and teammate.

"Ten, 20 and 30 years from now when kids ask who Pat Tillman was, we can teach those students the lessons Pat taught us," said Paul Yllana, a teammate on the 1993 team and a vice principal at Leland. "We can tell them about what Pat believed and what he was able to accomplish in his life."

After graduating from the Silicon Valley high school, Tillman went on to star at Arizona State and became a standout safety in the NFL.
