The Phoenix Suns today announced that forward Grant Hill has exercised his player option for the 2008-09 season.
Originally signed by the Suns as a free agent on July 11, 2007, the 14-year NBA veteran proved remarkably durable in his first season in Phoenix. Hill appeared in 70 games for the Suns, his most in a single season since 1999-00, including starts in 34 consecutive contests to open the season.
The 6-8 forward averaged 13.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 2007-08 while shooting at least 50 percent from the field (.503) for the third time in the last four seasons and establishing a career-high in free-throw efficiency (.867). Both his rebound and assist averages were his highest in five seasons. Hill tallied four double-doubles last season, including the first back-to-back double-doubles of his career since 2002 on Feb. 20-22.
Last season, the Duke product became the first player in league history to win the NBA Sportsmanship Award in multiple seasons (2004-05) and the first Sun to garner the honor. Hill also won the 2007-08 Dan Majerle Hustle Award.
Hill owns career averages of 19.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists in 14 seasons with Detroit (1994-2000), Orlando (2000-07) and Phoenix (2007-08).

So I'm wondering what it means. Does he want a better contract or is he moving on?

Huh? This means he's coming back to Phoenix.

EDIT: for future reference: A "player option" means that the player has the option of extending his contract for one year. A "team option" means its the teams choice. So if a team or player "exercises their option", that means they're returning to their team. If a player 'opts out' (like James Jones did) that means they're leaving or asking for a new deal.

Great News!!! I dont think he fits the system, would much rather have a guy who can Drain the 3 like Webster or Mike Miller there, But very glad he is staying, I wanna see him as a 6th man and Thank you that Mike D'Antoni isn't here to play Hill and Nash, way too many minutes!!

I took it to mean, Hill was already under contract unless he utilized his player option for this season to opt out. Needless to say, I'm glad he's staying and I am much relieved.

Maybe we should start Diaw or Tucker for SF and make Hill come off the bench.

Tucker is nowhere near ready to be a starter. I prefer starting Hill over Diaw, because Diaw can be a 6th/7th man who can come in for Nash, Hill, Amare or O'Neal, depending on who needs the first break due to fouls or whatever.

Grant Hill at his salary is a steal no matter how you analyze him.

Grant Hill is still starter quality and will not come off the bench. I am sorry some of you don't see this.

He was amazing for us last year until dantoni decided to play him into the ground.

Yeah! That darn D'Antoni and his relentless practices gave Hill appendicitis! Darn D'Antoni!

nope completely the opposite. he IS NOT under contract with the suns unless he chooses to exercise his player option....which he did.

so therefore he is coming back.

So who's gonna end up filling Hill's place at small forward eventually?

I don't like Boris at that position as he can't shoot the 3 nor defend other small forwards.
