I have a question for Hulu plus users. Thinking about dumping movie channels on DirecTV. However, I have to get my Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire fixes. How long is the lag time between it showing on TV and being available on Hulu Plus? Anybody know?

I never even noticed those shows were on hulu plus. If there are, I need to start watching game of thrones.

What I can say is that it seems network shows come on one to two days after airing where shows like southpark are like 3 weeks behind.

I have Hulu. Pretty sure HBO shows are only available on HBOGO or HBO On Demand. GoT and Boardwalk aren't available. Hulu redirects you to HBO's site to watch them and then you'd need a user account to access them.

Showtime puts some of its shows on Netflix (Weeds while it was still on the air and Dexter after it ended), but I don't think HBO does this.

Ahhhh OK. I subscribed to it to catchup on some shows my wife missed on ABC. In fact it was the opposite, all the shows on ABC.com were available on their own site but the one we missed. So, I had to watch it on Hulu. Just signed up for a free subscription period.

If HBO stuff is not on their at all I don't think that will work for me.

Yeah, sorry. There is a reason GoT is the most pirated show on TV, and possibly in history. They don't license it to anyone else. Not a smart business move, I think.

Hulu does NOT show any AMC, CBS or HBO shows.

Good to know. So much for "cutting the cable" so to speak. It seems like, unless you want to be a season behind (a la Netflix) you don't have much choice.

I think HBO go is about a year away from having a standalone service without cable subscription.

It is still weird to me that CBS has very to little streaming options outside of netflix and prior seasons. (and their own website last time I checked)

Hypothetically if you had a brother in law who pays for HBO that would give you his email and password you could watch all your favorite HBO shows with HBO Go for free.

Yeah, it's taking HBO a long time to jump on that wagon-my guess is they think it might purge viewers from cable broadcast. But I would think that the gain they would make with new viewers on the app would more than compensate for any losses they make to cable subs.

As for CBS, only thing I can figure is that they don't think their audience uses Hulu with any regularity, since they tend to skew older. As an interesting side note, CBS experimented with Amazon Instant Video to provide the first season of Under the Dome--to my knowledge that's the only time I've seen them offer any content that wasn't already available on DVD.

Just old shows it looks like--most of which are already on DVD. Good I guess if you use Hulu to watch older shows, but doesn't help those of us that use Hulu mainly for current programming.

+1.

Current programming (other than BBC shows) and Criterion movies make up 99% of my watching.

Not sure exactly what "recently acquired" means but they did say

"Additionally, fans will be able to catch up with more recently acquired hit CBS programming on Hulu Plus, including police drama “Blue Bloods,” launching this June, and highly-rated crime drama “Elementary.” The Sherlock Holmes-inspired show will stream exclusively on Hulu Plus, and we look forward to launching full seasons in the future."

That very well could mean that it coincides with DVD releases of these seasons but it kind of didn't sound like that.

At any rate, I am rethinking my entire entertainment dollar. I am thinking about going down to the lowest package DTV has to offer, keeping Hulu and possibly reopening Netflix. However, even that doesn't solve my problem with the likes of HBO.

I just bought season 1 of Elementary on Valentine's Day, but maybe they're doing already-aired episodes. I doubt they'll do day after air yet for CBS.

Okay one question regarding hulu plus do you still get ads/commercials if you upgrade to plus? I like Hulu but the ads are annoying in none plus version. I like the content a lot more than netflix since it's the newer shows and not old school stuff.

some shows yes, some shows no. The ads will be 1-3 short ads.

I watched shark tank on real tv the other day and got frustrated with the 6-7 commercials between segments.

It has ads but they arent bad at all IMO.

ive also noticed my xbox one has less ads than my roku

I accept the ads as the price of having network shows soon after release. The licensing costs for that must be very high. I never see more than 1 minute of commercials, usually it is around 30 seconds.

The ads aren't bad but I keep my finger near the mute button. You tend to see the same few commercials over and over and that can get a little annoying. I've yet to see a show on Plus that didn't include ads but they are spaced well apart during the show and are a minute per set or less. Much easier to live with than TV in general.

There have been a few shows including SVU that didn't have ads at some point. They all seem to now. Sometimes I get the option to watch a 1 minute long ad and skip ads for the rest of the show. I love it when that happens.

Really? I wish they'd made that offer in the shows I watch. I tend to watch multiple episodes of the same show in one sitting so the same old ads can get tiresome. As I said, I've yet to watch a show that didn't include ads but maybe my luck will change. I'd sort of expected it on the new shows but was disappointed to find out that you still get the ads even on the shows that are also available on Netflix (classic shows mostly).

We've also noticed that the later you watch TV (I'm talking 1 a.m. or later) there are fewer commercials, if any.
