No one was a bigger Bob Brenly fan than I, even before he replaced Buck Showalter. But I've seen some quotes about BB lately that are very disturbing!

He has said on radio over and over that he has preached patience -- to be aggressive -- when you see a pitch you CAN hit, not one you "want" to hit, and so be patient and selective. But NOBODY is doing it.

If Bob Brenly doesn't have the skill, or the respect, to guide his team, what's he doing in the Manager's chair? He's not a "preacher", he's supposed to be the leader.

"But NOBODY is doing it."??? Who's in charge here?

Brenly also said the 2 games he was suspended and watched on TV, he was screaming at all the first pitch hacking just like the fans. Alas - that experience didn't translate into anything useful.

And so, my question. Is he a bystander -- noticing things as a fan would, while watching TV? He's supposed to be picking up on problems while in the dugout, doing his job! Then doing something about it.

Again, who's in charge here?

These quotes seem to make a hellofa point. That, despite our Cinderella year, Bob Brenly may not be the complete Manager to (a) pick his staff or (b) mold the team in the long run.

It bothers me to be so brutal in these comments.

But there is a problem with our hitting . . . therefore, there must be a cause.

If the D'backs are going to do their best, someone is going to have to recognize it, and do something about it! So far, it hasn't been BB!

The Twilight Zone

It's interesting that the two guys molding our offense -- Bob Brenly and Dwayne Murphy -- each had their best seasons statistically (as players) during 1984, and each in the Bay Area.

Brenly with the Giants and Murphy with the A's.
Brenly's batting average was his career best; Murphy's was his 2nd highest.

CATEGORY............BRENLY............MURPHY
Games....................145...................153
At Bats....................506...................559
Runs.........................74.....................93
Hits.........................147...................143
2B.............................28.....................18

OBP....................... .352.................. .342
SLG........................ .464.................. .472
OPS........................ .816.................. .814
SB................................6........................4 (Murphy did have 100 in his career)
CS................................9........................5
AVG......................... .291.................. .256

Maybe two who were less similar to each other would be more effective.

Me! :D They are my abbreviated restating of what Brenly has said on his Weds 12:30 radio shows in the last month or two.

btw - I missed Tommy Jones' usual Saturday home game interview on KTAR this afternoon - anyone catch it? Anything interesting?

Only caught bits and pieces while making way to park... Remember him "not" denying the Lyle made the quotes that he did (indicating that Lyle is straightforward and honest) but that they weren't "in character" for him... that Lyle likely regrets the inevitable fallout his "off the cuff" remarks, and that he (Jones) would be discussing the situation with Lyle privately.
