Cam Newton---

You watch him at the Combine and he can't throw a good out pass.

You watch him in pre-season and he can't complete 50% of his passes.

You watch him when the lights come on and the game is for real and he turns into a dynamic passer---zipping out passes to both sides on perfect ropes and dropping long passes at the flick of a wrist into small windows.

And then you see the way he runs with ball.

All I can say is---we saw why this kid took Auburn on his back to a NCAA Championship. He shows up when the lights come on.

Newton's performance was definitely the biggest story of the game. But late in the fall the Cardinals victory may mean more to them than Newton's performance does to the Panthers. I don't mean to discredit it at all--I'm just glad we won and am fine with moving onto next week without any media love.

Though Calvisi was actually on the morning radio here in Toronto--which briefly through me for a loop, actually--and he and the host referred to the fact that Kolb's excellent performance was being (not surprisingly) buried.

It's kind of like when Michael Jordan lit up the Celtics for 63 in a playoff game. Noboy mentions that Boston won the game.

He's very very good for a rook, but - just like the new left-handed pitcher with the funky motion - give the rest of the teams in the league enough time to solve him and it won't seem so easy for him as the season unfolds.

I don't know. That kid Strasburg is back with the Nationals and still mowing done hitters. Oh wait he's right handed. Nevermind.

I'd just like to remind everyone that the number 5 pick - also in his first NFL game - also broke a record* and scored the winning TD.

*89 yards punt return/longest in team history according to the FOX guys.

I heard that too. But according to the Cards 2011 Media Guide some guy named Frank Bernardi returned one 95 yards for a TD for the Chicago Cardinals in 1956.

Both Johnny Roland and Chuck Latourette had 86 yard returns.

Ollie Matson had 9 total kick returns for TDs 3 punts and 6 kickoffs. No wonder the Rams traded their whole team for him.
