Don't get me wrong...its kinda neat that we get a blue chip player like drew...but considering only 5% of minor league players get to the majors and we already have cintron at short stop...isn't it kind of a waste?

IMO every year we should go out and get pitchers with the first 3-5 picks...this one just baffles me...

He'll probably change positions, like CF or 2B or something. Don't get me wrong, I like Cintron but his contract is almost up and I know he thinks he deserves to be paid more than he's worth. He isn't exactly an elite shortstop

Dennis Green was running the Dbacks draft and he took BPA regardless of position...just like he did with the Cards draft.

As a result, things couldn't be better...just remember:

DG 9 years no losing seasons, 8 playoff appearences, 2 nfl coach of the year awards etc I think he knows what he is doing. :barf:

Dbacks are in great shape

This was not a strong draft pool at all according to scouts - and most of the really good pitchers were gone by #15, so the switch to best player available made sense - especially since he was regarded as the best position player overall.

Drew could always be used as primo trade material if we don't end up wanting to field him for some reason.

We also have Santos who was our #1 last year or the year before.

If I'm not mistaken Drew is our third #1 SS in the last 4 years.

I like Cintron alot, but if Santos or Drew pan out to be good hitting SS then my friends, we now have a tough type of player to find. Top notch SS who can hit don't come around often, so when the opportunity to get one is there you cannot pass them up.

Cintron's contract isn't up. He's only in his second full year in the majors. That means he is still pre-arbitration and for next year he will be paid whatever the D-Backs offer him. IOW, one more year of way cheap after this.

For the next three years he will be arbitration eligible. He won't be free agent for 4 1/2 more years.

Most of you are ready to give up on Cintron?

Sheesh, you were the same guys saying the same thing about Overbay.

Cintron is having a down year considering the expectations. However, you DO NOT give up on him.

Actually, he's having an expected year, considering realistic expectations and projections. Last year was the anomaly. (Actually, same with Lyle - last year's dip was the aberration for him, and many people too quickly mistook it for his "real" level.)

One year does not a trend, or career projection, make, especially in the first year or two in the bigs. I think some of us are just saying there are shortstops who probably have more talent and potential in the pipeline.

For myself, that's not giving up on Alex, since I was never that high on him to begin with. He's fine for this team now. Hopefully we'll be bringing up eniough talent in the next 2-3 years that he'll be completely eclipsed. (If not, we're in for a real long haul. )
