Itawamba Community College made a quick exit at the NJCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Tournament on Wednesday.
The Indians never led and were dominated by powerhouse Florida Southwestern State College, 61-36, at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper, Wyoming.
Florida Southwestern (25-5), the No. 12 seed in the 24-team tournament, was led by Stephanie Serrano’s 16 points. She scored 11 in the second quarter to help give the Bucs a 38-18 halftime lead. ICC (25-6), the No. 21 seed, was shooting just 30.8% from the field at that point, and it didn’t get any better in the second half.
Florida Southwestern pushed its lead to 47-21 by the 5:07 mark of the third quarter, and it was 52-27 entering the fourth.
The Bucs shots 39.7% from the field. Asiana Britt scored 14 points, while Ivy Brown had 10 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. FSSC had 43 total rebounds to ICC’s 30.
The Indians shot 25.5% from the floor and missed all nine of their 3-point attempts. Tootie Lockett had a team-high 13 points to go with six rebounds. None of her teammates managed double figures in scoring.
ICC advanced to the national tournament for the first time since 2016 by winning the Region 23 Tournament.
Florida Southwestern will face New Mexico Junior College in the second round on Friday.
