Create an actual, NFL-sponsored (and supported) developmental league, where fringe players can get valuable in-game experience, and then in addition, cut the preseason down to 2-3 games.

The NFL would still be getting (potential) revenue from the developmental teams, and the guys filling in the bottom of the rosters could get the on-field time needed to allow scouts and coaches to better evaluate them.

Of course, this fictional developmental league would need to be somewhat profitable in order to make this work - maybe put the teams in the plethora of soccer-specific stadiums popping up all over the country...20-30K stadiums, instead of the usual college or older pro stadiums with all of the overhead expenditures.

With the sudden and surprise retirement by Andrew Luck, many players have become even more vocal against an 18 game regular season.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano wrote Tuesday morning. “Players already were disinclined to consider an expansion of the season, and days after one of the game’s brightest stars walked away at age 29 because of the physical toll he sustained playing the game, the players’ appetite for more games is even lower.”

Football is so incredibly violent. I mean, I love it, but Jesus, the pounding those guys take just on normal plays is crazy.

Then throw in a "slober knocker" type hit to a guys body once or twice a season, and its not hard to see why there's a trend towards early retirement.

18 games is too much.

Cut it down to two preseason games too, and just forget out starters playing in those.

I don’t like expanding the amount of teams in the playoffs. Even with just 12 there is always one or two teams that are a prohibited underdog.

Opens the door for the 10-6 team that gets shut out of the playoffs because an 8-8 team gets in by winning their crappy division.
