If Nash Is Extended He Will Be asking For A Raise

I guess Nash will be asking for a raise from the current deal if he signs a two year extension with the Suns. However, he will not make a decision until he sees what the new roster looks like. See part of the article written by Paul Coro dated 5-19-09 from azcentral.

Nash, 35, and his agent, Bill Duffy, have let the Suns know that they will wait to see how the Suns roster is altered before getting serious about negotiating a two-year contract extension. If and when that time comes, Duffy said Nash would ask for a raise from the current deal, which is slated to expire after paying him $13.125 million for the 2009-10 season.

This is where Nash and I split paths in regard to salary. IMO, such a contract is just too rich for an aging star. Maybe it's time to seriously shop for a PG now and seek trades.

I think I am with you. Plus, Nash is also stating he wants to see what moves the Suns make on their roster?? Sounds like Nash wants to explore other teams and is saying..."short of a turnaround on this roster or paying me loads of cash......thanks but no thanks".

I am ready to let Nash go for anything 10 million +. It's simply time to move on. Will we be as good without him in the next couple years? Probably not. But sometimes you have to take steps backwards to move forward and we are simply at a dead end with Steve IMO.

They should draft a PG this summer and ship Nash for a good 2010 pick and young talent. This is getting ridiculous. We dont need another GM called Steve.

I agree on the last part, but I also believe Sarver would want Nash around to fill seats and sell jerseys. If they move Nash we might miss the playoffs again next year and end up with a high 2010 pick that they sold off. Do they have the balls to start rebuilding sooner rather than later?

They could pick a PG in the draft and move J-Rich and Nash for wing player and then let Dragic and new dude fight over the starting spot. Just an idea.

Nash talking about a raise will negatively impact his trade value won't it. Teams aren't going to want to acquire a declining star, emphasis on declining, who wants a salary bump. Ugh.

This is what i've been trying to explain to a few folks in here to no avail.

I have no trouble keeping Steve Nash at a more reasonable salary if he were granted a two year extension. However, Nash wanting more than than 13.1M a year in an extension is unreasonable. Actually one year at 13.1M is excessive but that was his original contract.

Where we disagree, you dislike Nash as player whereas I like Nash as a player... but not at the proposed salary. I was hoping Nash could provide the Suns an orderly transition to the future and retire as a Sun. The Suns better be thinking PG in the draft or trade. In many ways, it is better that Nash creates the environment for a trade rather than the Suns.

In a way this sort of reminds me of Marion. I always liked him as a player but not at 17M. I bet his new contract will considerably be reduced way down.

LOL, I'm just being real. This team isn't getting better with Gentry as a head coach and Nash running the point. We'll be running and beating teams by 50 some nights, lose by 20 to good teams and sit at home again watching the playoffs. I'm sick of the run n gun, get some defense and lets win a ring for a change.

Sign and trade Nash to Portland for Bayless and a pick. Trade Amare for a good solid pick and expiring contracts and a young player who has potential. Amare is definitely a value in a trade for us. We shouldn't resign Amare and we should get something for him before he leaves. We aren't winning a ring with Amare's clueless defense and Nash's defense. If Sarver wants to keep these guys, there needs to be a legit move to get a big man down low that can stop the pick and roll and play good defense, rebound. The pick and roll nonsense has to end, Nash has no chance against it.

Technically speaking, "more than his current contract" could mean he wants a contract worth more than the 13M he is slated to make next season.

or I could be splitting hairs...
