For the most part Nash IS the system. If Nash goes the Suns will have to create a new system.

I think Chris Paul would be a good fit.

What makes Nash so unique is his insane shooting percentages at the PG position. I think there's lots of great passers out there that could replicate some of the stuff Nash does but I don't think there as many strong shooters.

I'm not sure Paul has the range to slot right in. I think Deron Williams is probably a better fit, same with someone like Calderon.

No one.... ever..... Has shot and passed like Steve.

Paul maybe can do it, but not with the same shooting percentages.

We are a top 8 lottery pick without him. Even last year we would probably be top 10 pick.

Welcome newbie!

Careful with such threads. There are those on here who actually think Nash is what holds this team back from a potential title run. No joke

There aren't just not many that are as strong of shooters, there aren't any whatsoever and there never have been. Since his return to the Suns Nash is statistically the best all around shooter in the history of the game, he gets far too little credit for that.

If Phoenix didn't have Nash they'd have a completely different system. Who knows if they'd be as good, but they wouldn't be the fast break, up tempo, shooting team you see now.

It's the same as asking if the Spurs didn't have Duncan, Lakers Kobe and Magic Howard. Teams would always be different without their stars.

I'm not sure Gentry has a system in the same way D'Antoni does. Few NBA coaches are as doctrinaire as Mike about the teams offensive playing style - PJ is the only current one I'm aware of and he's somewhat less so than D'A, IMO. (Recall when he came to the Lakers, many didn't think his triangle offense was suited to a dominant center like Shaq but he adjusted it quite readily. He and Tex Winter.)

Thus the best PGs for Gentry's style would simply be the best PGs in the league.

You would think after watching dismal PG play in this year's playoffs by other team's PGs, and Nash's solid play, that the bashing of Nash would go down somewhat. Arguably the best two PGs I saw in the playoffs this year were old guys Nash and Fisher. Neither is going to be accused of being great defenders, but both get timely charges and steals, and that is their weakest link. Nash is still one of the best shooters in the league, and we all know he's arguably the best at assists right now.

Hands down CP3 could get it done here. In fact, I would take him over Steve Nash simply because he does the things Nash can do (dish and shoot) and he plays way better defense.

The business side of basketball calls for each team that is not a contender to have one superstar, for the sake of revenue and promotion.

Right now, an aging Steve Nash is the only one we have.

The Suns aren't going to get rid of him to bring in a PG who is not too far behind him on offense and better on defense. Not if he is not a superstar.

If any other PG in the league is a "superstar," it's Chris Paul. I would love to build around him (as long as we are back to not having big men). Paul will not be here though.

I'll be mad if he goes to NY or LAL or pretty much anywhere.

In a van...down by the river.
I selected Chris Paul as well... "If PHX didn't have Nash..?"

How did I know where to find you? :D

All in good fun.
:)
If there was a way that i could show my appreciation for a great player like Nash while simultaneously voicing my opinion on whats best for the future of this team i would my friend. Unfortunately it comes across as "Nash hate"....which is ridiculous,it's just that after a 6 year run built around his skills i'm SO ready for a change.

Nashy is my all time basketball love interest. Forever will be my favorite player. With that said, at this point in time, CP3 would make this a better team. I just vomited in my mouth a little after saying that. "I'm sorry Steve. Please forgive me. I love you. . ."

Chirs Paul is only sort of available. The Hornets need to do a job of shopping him, but nobody is going to want a guy who will tank to forced a trade. The feeling that you can get him cheap seems a real reach..

On the surface it would seems like Dragic, a first round pick and JRich's expiring contract might get the job done. I guess some other players might need to be added to balance the trade. Of course that leaves the question, what about Nash?

I'm not so sure just keeping Nash and Dragic is not a better option. JRich might secure the Suns a big man later on.

Yup. Already have a great pg in Nash, though will not be around as long. Use JRich for a big. Nash + big > CP3 + no big
